So many people opt to go with destination weddings because they can feel a little more manageable since they usually involve a smaller guest list and less pressure to feel like you have to invite everyone you know. However, one couple's dream destination wedding quickly turned into a logistical nightmare after a travel advisory was issued for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where they planned to tie the knot.
To make things worse, the travel company they were working with refused to be flexible about rescheduling their flight. Now, it looks like they will completely lose all of the money they've already spent on their big day. Keep reading to learn more.
i guess don’t book with sunwing ? #wedding
♬ Hungarian Dances composed by Brahms - Kazukicki KAWAIImagine this: You hire a travel agent to help plan your dream destination wedding. And, as you're getting ready for your big day, you find out that the place where your wedding is supposed to be held is now under a travel advisory because of a dramatic rise in violence. But, instead of being able to rely on your travel agent to help you rebook your trip, you find out that they expect you to still go through with your big day, despite the potential danger to you and your guests.
That's exactly what TikToker @sam_d0ll says happened to her friends who were set to get married in Puerto Vallarta. She says that she and her friends were planning to travel to the region after using the Sunwing agency to book their trip. But, after learning that the region had been placed under a Level 2 Travel Advisory by the U.S. Department of State, the couple reached out to their planner for help.

“ They hit up the travel agent that planned this entire wedding and they’re like, ‘OK, yeah, we have to figure out a way to postpone this because no one’s comfortable coming or a lot of people aren’t comfortable coming,’” the TikToker says. But, instead of finding support, the Sunwing agent informed the couple that they were going to have to move forward with their plans since the airport was open or be forced to pay a 100 percent penalty.
The TikToker mocked the agency for their cavalier response, sarcastically saying, “ You have to fly into a war zone. There’s military. You’re good.” Unfortunately, the pair weren't able to find any help with their travel insurance, because the agency said they were unable to cover the trip to the region.
People Couldn't Believe Sunwing's Response
Many people jumped into the comments on the viral video to share their disbelief, with one person saying they were shocked to learn that travel insurance won't cover you if you head to somewhere that is under a travel advisory.
Unfortunately, there were also many comments from people who also had a terrible experience with Sunwing and who wanted to commiserate. "Who trusts Sunwing after all these years," one person wrote. "They have been terrible for years."
"Don’t ever fly with Sunwing. Ever. They don’t care about anyone," another person added.

It seems like Sunwing's policy about not rebooking flights to destinations under a travel alert is a departure from the industry standard, according to The Points Guy, who notes that many airlines will allow you to rebook your flight at no cost, or give you credits towards a future flight, including:

Puerto Vallarta is a Popular Destination Wedding Location
I truly feel for the couple in the OP's story, and hope that they are able to get their wedding back on track. Puerto Vallarta is a stunning wedding venue, and one that is very popular among brides and grooms looking for a beachy backdrop for their big day.
According to the Destination Weddings blog, people who book weddings here can find inexpensive options that cost under $10,000, or more expensive affairs that can drive the price up a bit. Hopefully the couple in the OP's story is able to recoup some of their costs so that they can still have the wedding of their dreams.
