A former fan favorite in Chicago is leaving the Detroit Lions by way of a trade, as running back David Montgomery is reportedly being sent to the Houston Texans in a deal that can’t (and won’t) be made officially official until the new league year begins on March 11.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini has the scoop on the deal and which players (and picks!) are going each way:
The Texans are trading Juice Scruggs, a fourth-round pick and a seventh-round pick for Montgomery, per source. t.co/LEvsmQq52p
— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) March 2, 2026David Montgomery ran for 716 yards on 158 carries last season for the Lions. He played in all 17 games, but finished with fewer than 1,000 scrimmage yards for the first time in his career. Montgomery finishes is time in Detroit having generated 638 touches, 3,156 total yards, and 33 touchdowns in 45 games over three seasons.
That run with the Lions came after a four-year stint with the Bears. Montgomery, a third-round pick (73rd overall) in the 2019 NFL Draft, was a fan favorite who was underutilized in Matt Nagy’s offensive scheme and (unsurpirsingly) found success in Detroit — thanks, in part, to Ben Johnson’s scheme when he was the Lions’ offensive coordinator.
David Montgomery reportedly being traded from Lions to Texans
This is an interesting trade for both teams.
For the Texans, they get a running back who can be part of a committee (as he was with the Lions) or be a load-carrying weapon (as he was with the Bears). Considering the questions regarding Joe Mixon’s future in Houston, bolstering the backfield makes sense for the Texans. That team probably isn’t done wheeling-and-dealing as it tries to continue building around quarterback C.J. Stroud, who has led the team to the postseason in each of his first three years as a pro.
As for the Lions, they get to kick-start reimagining their backfield without David Montgomery. ANd in the process, they’ll create more than $3.5 million worth of cap space with the trade. Montgomery had two years (and a void year in 2028) left on his contract with cap numbers of $8.37 million (in 2026) and $10.245 million (in 2027) coming down the pipeline. This trade breaks up the Sonic and Knuckles backfield Detroit had cooking with Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. But it also lands the team an intriguing offensive line piece with Juice Scruggs going from the Texans to the Lions. Scruggs was a second-round pick by Houston in 2023 and figures to slot in as Detroit’s starting center moving forward.
