Hundreds of layoffs are coming to Deerfield-based Walgreens, according to reports, with the company calling the decision to eliminate positions “difficult.”
“We’re focused on becoming America’s best retail pharmacy, beginning with improving the in‑store experience for our customers and patients,” a statement sent to NBC Chicago from a Walgreens spokesperson said. “To do this, we’ve made the difficult decision to simplify our organization in both the support center and with our field leadership to speed decision making and improve the service that millions of customers rely on every day. We have deep respect for our colleagues and greatly appreciate their contributions and are committed to supporting them throughout this transition.”
According to a Feb. 19 report from Crain’s Chicago Business and Bloomberg, Walgreens will eliminate 469 jobs in Illinois, and another 159 in Texas, where a distribution center will close.
The spokesperson did not immediately confirm to NBC Chicago how many jobs would be eliminated, or when the layoffs could take place.
In 2025, the suburban-based pharmacy chain was purchased by private equity firm Sycamore Partners, marking an end to the company’s long run as a publicly-traded company. The deal, valued about $10 billion, was completed in August.
Since acquiring Walgreens, Sycamore has cut costs by trimming staff and pay, and taking away paid holidays for some employees, Crain’s reported.
In 2024, the drugstore chain said it planned to close 1,200 of its roughly 8,500 U.S. stores. In 2025, the chain suspended a quarterly dividend it had offered for more than 90 years.
Walgreens, like its rivals, has been struggling with thin prescription reimbursement, persistent theft and rising operating costs among other challenges. Going private gives the company more flexibility to make changes to improve its business without worrying about Wall Street’s reaction.
