ROCHESTER, N.Y. — People in the Rochester area are reacting after the U.S. and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran, killing Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The conflict is widening on Monday, with Israel launching airstrikes on Lebanon after a Hezbollah attack that killed at least 31 people in Israel.

News10NBC went to the Baitun Naseer Mosque on East Main Street on Saturday to get reaction from faith leaders at an interfaith dinner. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Rochester hosted the dinner to promote interfaith dialogue, peace, and community.

Wajeeh Mirza, Imam for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Rochester, expressed his stance on the situation.

“We condemn all sorts of violence, wars, hatred. Because our motto is love for all, hatred for none. And we try to live by that,” Mirza said. “So it’s very unfortunate because in any kind of wars and conflicts, the people who suffer the most are the innocent people, right? The children, the women, the elders.”

Rev. Martha Stone of the Henrietta United Church of Christ also shared her thoughts.

“We look at the vision of peace is what guides us. And we try to always promote peace. And I think that the attack on Iran is not something that was needed. And, it is contrary to the teachings,” Stone said.

    Reaction from Iranian-Americans in Rochester

News10NBC is working to get reaction from Iranian-Americans living in Rochester on the recent conflict. In January, when thousands of people in Iran were killed in protests against the government and rising food prices, Iranian-Americans marched in downtown Rochester to raise awareness.

In June, when the U.S. became involved in airstrikes aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities, News10NBC spoke with an Iranian-American who has lived in the U.S. for nearly 50 years.
