The good news for infielder Ben Cowles is that a lot of teams want him as part of their organization. The less good news is that they seem to want him juuuuuuust outside the 40-man roster.
It’s for that reason that, after the Chicago Cubs claimed Cowles once again off of waivers, I suspect there’s a chance they might try to outright him once again at some point. They (and the White Sox and the Blue Jays) clearly want him in their organization as depth at Triple-A, but they don’t necessarily want to use a 40-man roster spot on him to do it, if push comes to shove and things get crowded.
So, anyway, that is all to say that the Cubs have claimed Cowles off of waivers (the third time they’ve acquired him), and they placed reliever Shelby Miller on the 60-day Injured List to make room on the 40-man.
Funny stuff there, by the way. Cowles was designated by assignment for the Cubs two weeks ago TO MAKE ROOM on the 40-man roster FOR Shelby Miller. You have to have a spot available to sign a guy like Miller, even if you know he won’t pitch again until the very end of the season (or maybe not this year at all). But once he’s on the 40-man, you can put him on the 60-day IL, which temporary removes him from the 40-man. Thus, a spot can be opened right back up for Cowles, who’d been put on waivers by the Blue Jays.
Now the Cubs have both Cowles and Miller, and they are none the worse for the wear in the process.
Which isn’t to say things probably haven’t been super fun for Ben Cowles, who has been bouncing around a lot since September:
Cowles will now return to Arizona from Florida, where he’d been very briefly springing with the Blue Jays. If he does stay on the 40-man, he’ll serve as up-down depth for the infield group, while trying to take a step forward at the plate at Iowa. Cowles, 26, hit well at Double-A with the Yankees before a wrist injury made him available in trade in 2024 (he came over with Jack Neely in the Mark Leiter Jr. deal). But he didn’t resuming hitting well at Triple-A with the Cubs, and didn’t hit in his brief time at Triple-A with the White Sox, either.
As I said, it’s more likely that Cowles will be DFA’d again later this month when the Cubs need a 40-man spot (they will likely need multiple for non-roster camp invites who make the team, like the outfield bench group and a reliever or two). From there, he’d hit waivers once again, and the Cubs would try to outright him to Iowa.
