Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan is all set to get the biggest responsibility of his coaching career after parting ways with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) last year after just one season.
Zaheer Khan had joined Lucknow Super Giants in August 2024 as a mentor, replacing Gautam Gambhir, who moved to Kolkata Knight Riders and then became India head coach. There was reportedly a difference in vision between Zaheer and the LSG management, which led to his removal.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to bring Zaheer Khan in to guide and shape the next generation of Indian fast bowlers. The board wants to strengthen India’s pace attack for the future, and they believe Zaheer’s experience can make a big difference.

As part of this move, Zaheer is expected to conduct special training camps at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru in the first week of March. These camps will focus only on fast bowlers. Young pacers from across the country are likely to attend and work closely under his supervision.
A BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Times of India: “A batch of fast bowlers has been invited from state associations for a special fast-bowling camp from Feb 28 to March 2 at CoE in Bengaluru under the tutelage of Zaheer. Head of cricket at CoE VVS Laxman has taken keen interest in this initiative.”
Will Zaheer Khan fully commit to the CoE role?
At present, the BCCI Centre of Excellence does not have a full-time fast-bowling coach. Former bowling coach Troy Cooley completed his four-year term in December after turning 60. Since then, the post has been vacant, and Zaheer may get that role if he agrees.
The source added, “Zaheer is very keen on taking up coaching roles. He was involved with Lucknow Super Giants and believes he can help the next generation of cricketers. It’s a good sign that a fast bowler of his stature has shown interest in BCCI programs. However, it needs to be seen if he wants to take up a full-time job at CoE, as it will require him to commit a lot of time away from his family.”
The BCCI has already clearly defined the role for the fast-bowling coach at the Centre of Excellence. The coach must work closely with the Indian cricket team’s support staff and design strong programs to develop young fast bowlers in the country.

The board usually prefers Indian coaches who understand the domestic system and rising players. At present, Gautam Gambhir has only Sitanshu Kotak in his staff with long CoE experience. It will now be interesting to see whether Zaheer Khan fully commits to the CoE role or steps into another bigger role.
Zaheer’s rise after India career
Zaheer finished his India career with 610 wickets across the formats. After retirement, the former pacer joined the Mumbai Indians team in 2018 as Director of Cricket Operations and played a big role in scouting players and planning team strategy.
In September 2022, he was promoted to Global Head of Cricket Development, overseeing talent growth across MI’s teams—MI Cape Town in South Africa, MI Emirates in the UAE, and MI New York in the USA’s Major League Cricket.
