Alabama showed off its bench on Sunday against Texas as the Crimson Tide mixed up its lineup. This comes amidst absences from usual key players.
Both guard Ace Austin and forward Naomi Jones were out during the game against Texas. According to head coach Kristy Curry, their status is determined “day-by-day.”
Senior guard Waiata Jennings saw significant playing time, with 19:04 on the court. This is the most she’s played since early December, when she played for 20 minutes against Louisiana-Monroe.
Jennings put a total of 8 points on the board, with 5 of those in the third quarter.
Coming into the third, Texas immediately widened the gap with the Crimson Tide to 37-20 with back-to-back jump shots. Jennings helped lessen the impact of this, coming in and knocking down a 3-pointer and a layup, pushing the score to 37-25.
“She was dialed in, locked in today, and just really impacted our team in such a positive way on a day where we’re a little shorthanded in our backcourts,” Curry said. “We need to carry that, bottle that, pack that in our bag, and take it to Greenville.”
Freshman guard Tianna Chambers also saw playing time against Texas but was unable to contribute any points to the board.
Chambers usually sees an average of five minutes a game, but in the Crimson Tide’s last game against Vanderbilt, Chambers saw a season high of 18 minutes and put up 4 points.
Freshman forward Joy Egbuna saw eight minutes of playing time against Texas, a minute short of her season high, which she reached in the recent Vanderbilt game.
Egbuna contributed 4 points to the board against Texas and 5 points against Vanderbilt.
“We’re a real big believer here in development, and what we do, and how we go about it,” Curry said. “We have confidence that this time of year, they’ll be playing their best basketball, and they have been, off the bench.”
