BSU holds State of the Black Union

The Black Student Union held the annual State of the Black Union on Monday. The theme was “Black to the Past,” where an alumni panel of UA graduates from different eras shared their experiences and offered advice to attendees.

Students discussed their concerns about issues affecting Black students, such as the need for civic engagement and togetherness within the UA Black community, to gain insight from the alumni and each other. Through a presentation highlighting success and potential improvements for the BSU, as well as the alumni panel, the State of the Black Union gave attendees a newfound perspective on the Black community at the University.

The panel consisted of UA alumni Willie Daniels, Patience Daniels and Kierra Strong.

“We’re all that we have,” said Patience Daniels, who is now a UA faculty member in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice. She spoke on the visible disconnect within the Black community and its members, and the importance of bridging that gap and eliminating the confusion between “mission and the purpose.”

“It’s about knowing that you belong in the places that you’re going to walk in,” Kierra Strong said on the identity aspect of her time at the University. “You walk with your head held high. Don’t walk with your shoulders down.”

Those in attendance also took in the importance of having spaces such as the State of the Black Union to discuss these topics.

“I think it’s important that we as Black students are coming together to these forums to hear what past members have to say so we can help progress as a community,” said Amari Demps, a freshman majoring in political science.

Madisen Sewell, a freshman majoring in nursing, said her takeaway from the event was the importance of speaking up to make a change in the community. “I think that’s been an issue because people are trying to stay out of things, rather than using their voice to try to fix it,” she said.

Savannah Strong, president of BSU, said she hopes that those in attendance of this year’s State of the Black Union consider what could be done to unify with one another through self-reflection and experience. “It’s really important that we continue to self-reflect so then that way, we’re pouring into others with the most humility, grace and gratitude,” she said.“I think that’s always been a mission for BSU, to always uphold that success here and after the Capstone.”
