Smollett's Alleged Attack
Smollett claimed he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood in 2019. However, police and city officials later said he orchestrated the hoax hate crime against himself, NBC News reported. The city of Chicago went on to sue Smollett, accusing him of submitting a false police report, saying he knew his attackers and planned the attack. They also sought $130,000 in expenses spent on the police investigation. Smollett filed a countersuit denying that he orchestrated the attack, and he denied making a false police report.
By 2025, the city and Smollett told the court they had settled “but need more time to finalize documentation, NBC continued.
Last year, Smollett shared a post on Instagram that stated he made a $50,000 donation to the Building Brighter Futures Center for the Arts, a Chicago-based non-profit that nurtures self-expression, creativity, and exploration of the arts for Chicago youth. He shared he would also make a $10,000 donation to the Chicago Torture Justice Center, which helps those healing from the violence of the Chicago Police Department.
