New Writer, Steele Cleared, Brown, Assad, and Rolison Rolling (And Other Cubs Bullets)

Hello, and good morning, Bleacher Nation! My name is Cole Bair, and I’m the new ‘weekend Cubs guy’ at BN, providing morning bullets and occasional game coverage (once they begin), and I’m thrilled to be here!

I’ve been reading BN since 2010 and have known Michael for a number of years now, having had him as a guest on radio shows I’ve hosted. Yes, my full-time job is in radio, overseeing operations of KCNZ-AM, aka, ‘1650 The Fan’ in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The station is an affiliate of the Cubs Radio Network, which is why I’ve occasionally pestered Michael to join me on the air. I also spent seven years as a sports correspondent for The Cedar Rapids Gazette, mainly covering University of Northern Iowa football and men’s and women’s basketball. Anyways, enough about me, there’s plenty of Cubs to get to on this sunny, Sunday morning.

Saturday’s big news was Justin Steele’s tweet announcing that he has been cleared by his Doctor. Michael had way more on that news earlier this morning, in case you missed it. So I’ll leave you with that link, and we’ll otherwise move on.

    — Bleacher Nation (@BleacherNation) March 1, 2026 We will stick with the rotation, however, as the Cubs’ depth really showed up yesterday. Eight scoreless innings from Colin Rea, Ben Brown, and Javier Assad led the way in a 6-2 Cubs win over the Dodgers yesterday. Rea went: 3.0 IP, 1H, 0BB, 0 ER, 2K. He’s logged 4.2 IP now and looks to be picking up where he left off after last season (a season that saw him exceed our expectations). Meanwhile, Brown followed Rea with the following line: 2.0 IP, 1H, 0BB, 0 ER, 3K. And more importantly, Brown mixed in his new sinker 19-percent of the time and his changeup 4-percent of the time. He also touched 99mph (hot radar gun?), was missing bats, and frankly shoving in such a way that would make it hard not to bring him to Chicago rather than send him to Iowa later this month. Not to be overlooked, Assad went: 3.0 IP, 1H, 0BB, 0 ER, 4K with increased velocity, reaching 94-95mph with his sinker (or, again, the gun was hot…).

    Ben Brown today:2.0 IP | 1 H | 0 BB | 0 R | 3 KPitch Usages:KC – 41%FF – 37%SI – 19%CH – 4%Four different pitch types, sitting 97+ on FF/SI, generated a 55% whiff rate and 85.4 mph EV. pic.twitter.com/a0yahU4Bjh

    — Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) February 28, 2026 Assad’s path to breaking camp with the big league club may not be as clean-cut as it is for Brown, given he’ll leave soon to compete with Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. And I don’t think it’s hard to imagine the Cubs utilizing Assad’s available option to reexamine him post-WBC in non-high leverage outings in Iowa. Either way, we should see both guys in Chicago as Craig Counsell “out-getters” plenty this summer.

Javier Assad sat 94.2 mph with 13” of HB on his sinker today. Located well and collected 3 Ks over 2 scoreless innings. pic.twitter.com/nETmX94VGo

    — Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) February 28, 2026 One of the Cubs’ many low-cost, low-risk reclamation types has already caught the attention of his manager, according to Bruce Levine.

Cubs LHP Ryan Rolison has caught the attention of manager Craig Counsell. Rockies 1 draft pick in t.co/i6XJvLZQU6 bullpen slot up for grabs.

    — Bruce Levine (@MLBBruceLevine) February 27, 2026 Rolison has had just two, one-inning outings this spring, but if he’s caught Counsell’s eye, then the eye test and data coming out of his bullpens must be ‘Brad Keller-esque’, let’s say. Reports have his velocity up nearly 3 MPH. Combine that with the pedigree of being a former first-round pick (and the Cubs’ recent success of rejuvenating these types of arms), and I’m beginning to get excited about his chances to grab the last available spot in the bullpen. Team Japan had a pre-WBC public workout yesterday, and Seiya Suzuki launched one into the 5th (?!?) deck of the Vantelin Dome in BP.

    — Cubs Zone (@CubsZone) February 28, 2026 Given he missed the last WBC with injury, please just stay healthy Seiya! Hopefully, the earlier-than-usual high-leverage, competitive at-bats help him start fast this season, but mostly, please stay healthy. How cool of a story is this?!

    — MLB (@MLB) March 1, 2026 The Cardinals are extending Oli Marmol. Entering his fifth season with St. Louis, Marmol is 325-323 overall. Understandable for the Cards to secure managerial stability during their teardown. One does wonder, though, how many more batters will Marmol intentionally walk as Cardinals skipper with his team down four on the road in the bottom of the 8th?

BREAKING: #Cardinals and manager Oli Marmol have agreed to a two-year extension, a source tells The Post-Dispatch.New contract for careerlong Cardinal begins after this season for 2027-2028 and also includes a club option for 2029.News story posted now @stltoday. #stlcards
