Pakistan spinner Usman Qadir, who had announced his retirement back in 2024, has overturned the decision and has returned to international cricket, making himself available for selection to the PCB across all formats of international cricket.
Pakistan made a humiliating exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026; however, their exit would not only have a grave impact on the team's morale but could also enforce major changes to the side. The captaincy of Salman Ali Agha might be under serious threat; on the other hand, considering Pakistan's fickle nature with coaches, Mike Hesson's role as their head coach could also come to an end.
However, this calls for major swaps in the team dynamics, and several players might be shown the exit door and would be replaced by others. Under such circumstances, the Pakistan spinner who retired from internationals earlier has returned and made himself available.
The spinner being talked about is Usman Qadir, a 32-year-old leg spinner who decided to call off his career too early in 2024. It is worth mentioning that he is the son of legendary Pakistani spinner Abdul Qadir. He represented his national side in 26 internationals, which include 25 T20Is.
Before Abrar Ahmed rose to prominence as one of the lead spinners for Pakistan in white-ball cricket, Usman Qadir functioned as their key spinner in the shortest format of the game, having made his debut in 2020.
However, after not making a place for himself regularly in the XI, he announced a shocking retirement at age 31 and moved to Australia, where he started playing domestic cricket.
Usman Qadir reverses International retirement after Pakistan's T20 World Cup exit
Usman Qadir's retirement reversion comes right after Pakistan's World Cup exit and the call for a revamp of the entire national side. However, the son of the legendary cricketer remarked that he feels that, considering his father's legacy for Pakistan cricket, he should make himself available for the nation.
Moreover, he also referred that his time in Australia has almost handed him back his mojo, and he feels he is ready to make things count this time.
"After a period of deep reflection and a successful stint in Australia, I have decided to officially withdraw my retirement from all formats of international cricket with immediate effect. My time playing in Australia was transformative. Achieving 41 wickets and receiving such a positive response reminded me that my competitive edge is as sharp as ever. It proved to me that I still have a significant contribution to make on the global stage."
"Cricket is more than just a sport for me; it is a family legacy. After discussing this with my family and considering my father's immense contributions to Pakistan cricket, I feel a profound responsibility to continue. My family's wishes, combined with my own burning desire to represent my country, have made this decision clear."
"I am fully committed to the grind and am making myself available for selection across all formats, starting from the basics, to serve Pakistan cricket to the best of my ability. My journey isn't finished. I am ready to carry forward the spirit of Pakistan cricket once again," Usman Qadir posted on X.
