A New NFL Scouting Combine Darling Emerges, Ranking Recent Round 1 QBs, NFC North Cap Update, and Other Bears Bullets

Day 40 of the Chicago Bears offseason. An ice cream product that I’ve been waiting to hit store shelves all month long is finally in stock. So as soon as I press send on this installment of BN Bears Bullets, I’ll be off to do some grocery shopping. Wish me luck!

This might be the biggest takeaway from Friday’s happenings at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis:

    — Matt Clapp (@DaBearNecess) February 27, 2026 If you are a Bears fan reading this, then maybe you are a little geeked up about the possibility of Chicago drafting a safety prospect. After all, both of the team’s starters and both of its backups are on the cusp of hitting free agency in March. However, top prospect Dillon Thieneman (who was sent to the Bears in an insider NFL Mock Draft back in January) might have run his way out of Chicago’s draft range. Thieneman ran the 40-yard dash in a blazing 4.35 seconds. Garrett Podell (CBS Sports) has grades for top defensive back prospects. I’m bookmarking this one for later when I dive deeper into my pre-draft work

ESPN’s Matt Miller ranks the quarterback prospects from the last six draft classes, which helps provide a perspective as to where the current crop of prospects would rank against their peers from other classes. As you might expect, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams checks in at No. 1. Following Chicago’s QB1 are Trevor Lawrence (Jaguars, 2021), Jayden Daniels (Commanders, 2024), Drake Maye (Patriots, 2024), and Bryce Young (Panthers, 2023) to round out the top-5. My short-and-quick takeaway here is that I feel good about feeling good when it comes to the Caleb Williams pick. Zach Wilson (Jets, 2021) is a surprise at No. 6 in my book. I think C.J. Stroud (Texans, 2023) and Justin Fields (Bears, 2021) were among the more well-rounded prospects who probably should’ve ranked higher than Wilson. Heck, I’d put Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza over Wilson. Don’t get me wrong. Wilson still lands in the top-10 in these rankings. But I feel as if Mendoza is a better overall prospect given his skills and collegiate accomplishments. Unsurprisingly, Kenny Pickett (Steelers, 2022) was at the bottom of this particular set of rankings. (Photo by Justin Casterline/Getty Images) The Pittsburgh Steelers home field graded out as the worst in the league. And now, the Steelers will be taking a page from the Chicago-style playbook by switching to a Bermuda strain of grass, which the Eagles and Bears currently use. So, yes, the Bears are a model franchise in terms of rebuilding offensive lines overnight and laying down quality grass surface. We truly live in a bizarro world now. Matt Eberflus was problematic during his run as Bears head coach, but being the driving force behind the Chicago Park District ditching the Kentucky Bluegrass for the Bermuda strain in 2022 was a good thing he did. Hey, even a blind squirrel can find a nut every now and again.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones (via ESPN) on the team’s offseason plans: “I would bet that we will spend more money in free agency than we have.” In order for Jones to make good on his promise, his cap experts have some work to do because the team is currently $56,133,904 *OVER* the cap. The Bears currently sit in the red and are $6,484,355 over the cap. I hope that number doesn’t tweak you out. The Packers ($4.093 million), Lions ($12.159 million), and Vikings ($45.506 million) are also over the cap as of this time. Only the Cowboys are in a worse spot against the cap than the Vikings. And to think, they can’t blame Nine or this one! I wonder if Keon Coleman will be on the Bills when they play the Bears later this year. On the one hand, this clip featuring new Bills Head Coach Joe Brady would suggest that he has a chance to make something happen…

Bills new head coach Joe Brady on Keon Coleman"I told Keon as soon as I got hired, when I called him, I said: 'Look man, the best thing to happen to you is me being your head coach.'" pic.twitter.com/SVng0gkPkD

    — NFL on CBS ? (@NFLonCBS) February 26, 2026 … but on the other hand, Brady talking like this as if he hadn’t been Coleman’s offensive coordinator and play-caller the last two seasons made me do a double-take. Legendary ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman has set an end date for his career, sharing his plans to retire after the 2029 NFL season. I’m rooting for him to make it happen, as it would mark 50 years at the company for him. People don’t stay in one place long enough anymore, so Berman making it through to the end of the 2029 NFL season would be one of the most remarkable accomplishments in modern sports media history.
