Spectrum Aquatics Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming: 2/28/26

    Blake Beaver, 14, SwimRise Aquatics (FL): Beaver set seven long course best times at the Speedo Sectionals in Plantation, Florida, last weekend, highlighted by her performance in the 400 IM. The 14-year-old product of SwimRise Aquatics, an upstart team out of Jacksonville, broke 5:00 for the first time in 4:59.25, winning the ‘B’ final, earning a Summers Junior cut and moving into 4th this season in the girls’ 13-14 age group. Her previous best stood at 5:03.09, set last summer. She also clocked 9:12.61 in the 800 free to rank 8th this season in the age group, and her time of 2:23.05 ranks her 5th in the 2025-26 campaign. She added bests in the 50 back (33.16), 100 back (1:09.87), 200 back (2:25.35) and 50 fly (30.72).

    Olivia Kim, 12, Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics (MR): Kim set a pair of best times at the Senior Mets Winter Championships two weeks ago in East Meadow, highlighted by her performance in the 200 breaststroke. The 12-year-old Asphalt Green Unified Aquatics product clocked 2:27.41 to knock more than two seconds off her previous best time of 2:29.74, set in December, to rank her 8th this season in the girls’ 11-12 age group. She also set a new PB in the 100 breast, clocking 1:10.24, which was notably less than a second faster than she opened her 200 breast (1:11.12). Kim also contested the 200 fly (2:17.32) and 400 IM (4:45.52) at the meet.

    Declan McDonald, 14, Badger Swim Club (MR): McDonald produced four best times at the Senior Mets meet, moving into the top 10 in the boys’ 13-14 age group this season in three of them. The Badger Swim Club member had a monster swim in the 400 IM, breaking 4:00 for the first time in 3:57.76 to drop nearly three seconds from his previous best (4:00.39) and rank 4th in the 13-14 age group this season and 48th all-time. McDonald also went 9:25.56 in the 1000 free to rank 5th in the age group this season and 99th all-time, and he also moves to 8th this season in the 1650 free (15:58.89) and 38th in the 200 free (1:44.10).

    Aaron Tong, 12, Shawmut Aquatic Club (NE): Tong had a phenomenal performance at the New England SCY 11-14 Championship last weekend in Wellesley, Mass., setting six best times and moving into the top 10 in the boys’ 11-12 age group this season in all of them, while also cracking the top 100 all-time in four. Tong’s top swim came in the 200 IM, where his time of 2:01.62 moves him into 2nd this season among 11-12 boys and 44th all-time. He also moved to 3rd this season and 48th all-time in the 50 free (22.86), while in the 100 free (49.86), he ranks 8th this season and 65th all-time, and in the 100 fly (54.98), he sits 7th this season and 87th all-time. His two other PBs came in the 200 free (1:49.62) and 200 breast (2:20.23), where he moves to 7th and 8th, respectively, in the age group this season.

    Helen Manak, 14, Academy Bullets Swim Club (IL): Manak fired off six new best times at the JPY Speedo Chicagoland Championship two weeks ago in St. Charles, Ill., picking up four victories and three more podium finishes. In the 100 fly, Manak lowered her month-old best time in the prelims (56.18) before breaking 56 seconds for the first time in the final, getting down to 55.36 to rank 13th in the girls’ 13-14 age group this season. She also set best times in the 50 free (23.77), 100 breast (1:05.96), 200 breast (2:24.49), 200 fly (2:07.27) and 400 IM (4:36.12).
