Ahead of the vital clash between India and the West Indies at the Eden Gardens for the semi-final spot in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla has advised the Indian team not to go in targeting massive totals, since that could often lead to them being dismissed with a rather short number of runs.
India have won their second match against Zimbabwe, and the West Indies, on the other hand, have lost the game to South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which has made the India vs West Indies game a do-or-die game for either of these two teams.
However, there is one condition that has not been spoken of much. What happens if the match is called off due to rain? In such a case, India will be eliminated, and the West Indies will be through due to their high run rate as compared to the Men in Blue.
Ahead of the vital clash between India and the West Indies, which seals the World Cup fate for the two teams, cricketer-turned-commentator Piyush Chawla has opined that if either of the two teams goes into the game thinking of a massive score, then they are likely to collapse before reaching the par scores.
The former spinner, who has been part of KKR throughout many years of his IPL career, has played a lot at the Eden Gardens and is well aware of the dynamics of the ground. Chawla, when asked whether a 220-230 run total can be expected from two of the best batting units in this T20 World Cup, dropped a shocking opinion.
"The World Cup pressure is slightly different. So teams don't go to score 220-230 there. Even if you score 190 there, it becomes 210 due to that pressure, and whichever team goes thinking about 220-230 can get bundled out for 160," he responded.
"A lot depends on how the team starts in the powerplay." - Piyush Chawla
The spinner went on to further claim that the powerplay score would be a deciding factor as to how big the final score would be. This seems evident through his words that he solely believes that batters would have the upper hand here at the Eden Gardens.
"So the thought process matters a lot there. A lot depends on how the team starts in the powerplay. However, you never go into such a high-pressure game thinking about 220-230," Chawla observed.
West Indies posted the third-highest total in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup during their Super-8 clash against Zimbabwe in this edition, and India passed them with a 256-run total against the same opposition in their second Super-8 clash.
Piyush Chawla places big money on Indian spinners for the clash against the West Indies
As the former World Cup winner with India believes that the batters from either of these two teams will handle the power play and the death overs equally well, the middle overs will be a decisive juncture in the game.
"The middle overs will be very crucial in this game. The teams will play almost similarly in the powerplay and the last five to six overs because the Eden Gardens pitch is like that, and the ground is slightly small," he opined.
He pinned his hopes on Indian spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel and opined that if they can control the game without leaking much during the middle phase, then India will have the upper hand in the innings.
"However, in the middle-over phase, if the Indian spinners bowl restrictively there, where Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel will have huge roles, the Indian team can exert their dominance on the West Indies batters there," Chawla observed.
