Sanju Samson’s short ball weakness exposed as right-left combo saves India XI spot

Former Indian cricketer and commentator S Badrinath is not happy with Sanju Samson’s performance during the defending champions’ massive 72-run win over Zimbabwe in their must-win Super 8 clash of T20 World Cup 2026 in Chennai on February 26.

Sanju Samson returned to India’s playing XI against Zimbabwe and played only his second match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. Samson gave India a quick start by smashing 24 runs from just 15 balls with two big sixes and one four. He entertained the Chennai crowd with his fearless shots.

But once again, a short ball did the trick. The Kerala batter tried to attack but ended up giving a simple catch at deep mid-wicket. It was not the first time this happened. Over the last year, the right-handed batter became the victim of similar short deliveries many times in T20 cricket.

Samson is still technically wrong: S Badrinath

Reacting to his wicket in Chennai, Badrinath believes that there is a clear technical mistake in Samson’s batting. He pointed out that the Indian wicketkeeper-batter moves too much towards the leg side while playing shots. This opens up all three stumps and gives bowlers a clear target.

Subramaniam Badrinath said in a video on his YouTube channel, "Sanju Samson's selection had the Chepauk crowd extremely happy. He provided a reasonable start as well. But he is still technically wrong by moving away from the ball towards the leg side. He shows all three stumps to the bowler, giving them a target. A batter from a young age is taught not to show all the stumps to a bowler.”

The cricket pundit further added, “Once you show all three stumps, you are making a fundamental mistake. I doubt whether he listens to the coaches who tell him this. Most of the batters in the Indian team have their personal coaches. So, I am not sure how much he incorporates what the coaches say into his game. There is a definite technical flaw in his game. It'll be hard for him to rectify this during the tournament.”

Still, Badrinath supported Samson’s selection. He said the right-left combination at the top is very important for the team, and presently, Samson is the only proper option to balance the opening pair, and he gave the team a good start, so he can’t dive deep into his technique at this stage.

With Sanju Samson back at the top, Ishan Kishan moved to No. 3, and Tilak Varma went down to No. 6. The change worked well. Kishan scored 38 runs. Tilak stayed unbeaten on 44. Hardik Pandya added fireworks at No. 5 with a blazing 50 off just 23 balls.

    Badrinath warns India of "over-tinkering"

Now, Badrinath warns the Men in Blue against making too many changes, as the current batting order looks strong and balanced. He also reminded India’s think tank of their crushing loss to South Africa in their first Super 8 clash due to "over-tinkering."

He signed off by saying, “This batting order looks excellent. My only advice to the management would be not to change this again. Don't bring someone in against the West Indies for some reason. Just not doing anything to this is enough for the Indian team to do well instead of acting oversmart."
