PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Village of Pittsford is considering a proposal to ban bicycles on sidewalks, aiming to improve pedestrian safety.
Board member David Wilkes said the village has faced issues with people being hit by e-bikes while walking.
“Our mayor has been struck twice by bicycles in the village while on the sidewalk. I know I’ve been hit once before,” Wilkes said.
The proposal would allow only unaccompanied children to ride bikes on sidewalks. It advises cyclists to ride near the right-hand curb.
Wilkes said the village heard from many bikers at a public meeting earlier this month. A cyclist outside the Towpath Bike Shop expressed understanding of the proposal.
“I try to avoid sidewalks as much as possible because I know it’s not always the best to be on sidewalks — they’re supposed to be for pedestrians,” Elizabeth Cornehlsen said.
One resident argued for allowing bikes on sidewalks, citing the dangers of road cycling.
“I have had some really close friends that have unfortunately had accidents and been killed on bikes in the road,” Chris Collins said.
Collins said he loves Pittsford and thinks it’s important to let kids and families ride together on the sidewalk.
“I think it’s safer,” he said. “And I think it’s important that everyone gets out and enjoys this beautiful town that we live in.”
Wilkes said the board tabled the issue, with some members considering removing age restrictions for sidewalk cycling, and there is nothing to be voted on yet.
“At the end of the day, it is not banning for the sake of banning,” he said. “It is trying to make sure that everyone is as safe as possible.”
