SAN JOSE – Sharks defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin was away from the team’s practice facility on Friday for personal reasons, coach Ryan Warsofsky said.
Warsofsky said it remained unclear as to whether Mukhamadullin, 24, would be available to play Saturday when the Sharks host the Edmonton Oilers in the second game of a crucial six-game homestand.
Through a mix of injuries and healthy scratches, Mukhamadullin has only played in 26 of the Sharks’ 56 games this season. Mukhamadullin was a healthy scratch Thursday as the Sharks lost 4-1 to the Calgary Flames in both teams’ first game back after the Olympic break.
Speaking with Bay Area News Group before Thursday’s game, Mukhamadullin expressed his frustration about how this season has gone and spent time pondering where he’s at in his career.
“I just think about that,” the Russian-born Mukhamadullin said of his career Thursday morning. “Everyone says I’m young, I’m still young, but I’m already 24. I think it’s not that young. It’s time to do something.”
When he has played this season, Mukhamadullin’s ice time has been notably down from 2024-25, as he’s averaging 16:15 per game, well below the 18:04 he posted in 30 NHL games last season.
“Honestly, I’m not happy with how my season is going,” Mukhamaduklin told the Bay Area News Group. “Not playing that many games. Also have, like, small ice time. When I play, every time, it’s 13, 14 minutes.
“But it is what it is. Just try to stay positive every day. Just a lot of thinking in my head right now about my season, but just stay positive and just prepare for every game and be ready.”
If he’s available, Mukhamadullin could get a chance to play Saturday as the Sharks look to bounce back from an uneven performance against the Flames. The Sharks started strong and took a 1-0 lead early in the second period on a goal by Tyler Toffoli, but allowed three third-period goals in their fifth straight loss.
The Sharks entered Friday five points out of a playoff spot with 26 games left to play.
