ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Auto Show has returned. It kicked off Friday morning at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center and runs through Sunday, featuring over 150 new models of cars and trucks.

The show brings together car dealers across the region to help people select a new car. News10NBC spoke with experts about how federal policies, such as tariffs and the expiration of electric vehicle tax credits, are impacting the car industry.

    Impact of tax credit changes

Congress passed legislation that ended the $7,500 credit for new electric vehicles and the $4,000 credit for used ones. Because the credits expired last September, electric cars must be more competitive on the market for consumers to choose them, said Brad Macerevy, president of the Rochester Automobile Dealers’ Association.

“I think the industry right now is trying to figure out where that’s going to land in terms of the popularity of EVs. Hybrid technology is going to be very, very popular for a while now,” Macerevy said.

However, this tax season, there is a new deduction on interest paid for cars made in America. It applies to both the standard and itemized deductions. You can read more on the IRS website.

    Impact of tariff ruling

The auto show comes amid some changes to the federal economic policy that could impact car prices. The Supreme Court last week struck down President Donald Trump’s country-specific tariffs as unconstitutional. After the ruling, Trump signed a 10% tariff on all countries importing goods to the U.S.

It’s unclear at this point how the recent Supreme Court ruling is impacting the car market. However, according to Kelley Blue Book’s latest report, tariffs have increased the prices of new cars priced under $40,000 by as much as $6,000. The tariffs don’t directly impact used cars, because they’re already past the point of import. However, as News10NBC has covered, an increase in the price of new cars drives up the demand for used cars.

    Growth in hybrid cars

Sedans, SUVs, electric vehicles, hybrids, commercial trucks, and more will be on display at the auto show. However, some areas of the car industry are growing faster than others. Macerevy told News10NBC there’s been more demand for hybrid cars.

“With the vehicles we have here, it’s an evolving situation with the technology. Gas vehicles, of course, are still out there. EVs are still out there, but we’re now seeing a growth in the hybrid technology now. So, lots of those options out there as well,” he said.

“We see people walking in, looking at cars, and they end up walking out with a puppy, which is kind of fun to watch,” Macerevy said.
