British diplomats withdrawn from Iran in sign US strikes are coming

All British diplomatic staff have been withdrawn from Iran amid signs that Donald Trump could imminently carry out military action against the Tehran regime.

The Foreign Office said officials were being “temporarily withdrawn” from the country “due to the security situation”.

The UK embassy will continue to operate remotely, the Foreign Office said.

It follows an announcement by the US State department earlier on Friday that all non-essential diplomatic staff were being pulled out of Israel – further fuelling expectations that a US strike could be imminent.

Americans visiting Israel “may wish to consider leaving Israel while commercial flights are available”, the US advice says.

Over the past few weeks Trump has overseen the biggest build-up of military hardware and forces in the Middle East since the eve of the Iraq war in 2003.

Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and other US officials have been taking part in negotiations in Geneva this week over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Fresh technical talks are due to take place next week in Vienna, but there have been reports that the US side was disappointed with the latest progress.
