Monroe Avenue bridge repairs set to start this spring, businesses and residents share thoughts

BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Starting this spring, Monroe Avenue will undergo significant changes as the Department of Transportation (DOT) begins work on repairing two overpasses in the area. This construction is part of a multi-phase revamp of the Monroe Avenue corridor.

News10NBC’s Erin Mahon reported live from the on-ramp to 590 North from Monroe Avenue, one of the bridges slated for repair. The DOT selected this bridge and another over Allen’s Creek for funding due to their poor condition.

Repairing the bridges is just phase one of a $55 million project. The town of Brighton said phase two will address the street itself. The DOT plans to reduce traffic from four lanes to three, with two travel lanes and one turn lane in the middle. The town supports this plan but wants to include bike lanes on the shoulders.

Resident Kevin Nelson has proposed designs with no turn lane and wider shoulders. This would allow for both pedestrian and bike access on either side of the road.

When asked about the condition of the bridges and roads, residents expressed their dissatisfaction.

“Wow this bridge is terrible looking, is there going to be a chunk that falls on my car?” said Billy Martin. “I’m sure it’ll pose a nuisance for business owners, residents, commuters, but we have to look at the bigger picture,” Martin said.

Construction is expected to continue until 2028. Russ Torregiano, owner of Needle Drop, believes the wait will be worth the outcome. “Having shoulders would be awesome. Having like a middle lane designated for just turning in would be awesome,” Torregiano said.

However, Stefanie Lambe, owner of Color Me Mine, expressed concerns about the impact on her business. “Having construction like that out front where you know it’s going to be noisy– so I’m definitely concerned about the impact that’s going to have on my business,” Lambe said.

For those interested in learning more about the project’s timeline, the DOT will host an info session next Thursday, March 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Empire State University. The session will feature displays about the project and DOT representatives will be available to answer questions.
