The Zaitoun Misdemeanor Court sentenced two defendants to two months in prison on Tuesday, with a LE 1,000 bail for intentionally and fatally poisoning several stray dogs.
The Public Prosecution initiated the lawsuit, with the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR), representing the Association for Animal Protection team as a civil claimant.
The ECESR’s Facebook page reported that it recently concluded an extensive campaign to rescue, vaccinate, sterilize, and treat several stray dogs in the area.
According to the case files, just days after this work was completed, the defendants deliberately killed the animals by providing them with poisoned food.
The ECESR further testified that its members had faced persistent threats from the defendants due to their animal welfare activities.
The prosecution’s case was supported by police investigations and CCTV footage, which depicted the defendants poisoning the dogs.
This evidence served as the foundation for the initial report filed with the Al-Zaitoun Summary Prosecution, which subsequently referred the case to the Misdemeanor Court.
