In a major development, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) appointed Abhay Sharma as their fielding coach, replacing South Africa legend Jonty Rhodes, ahead of the IPL 2026 season. After repeated failures in two consecutive Indian Premier League seasons, the LSG franchise has been making multiple changes in its set-up.
The franchise not only updated their squad through the mini auction, but also has been making significant changes in their back office to give the team a new look and new hope. Before appointing Sharma, they recently appointed former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody as their Global Director of Cricket and New Zealand batting legend Kane Williamson as Strategic Advisor.
As part of their recent development process, the Lucknow-based franchise roped in former Delhi cricketer Abhay Sharma, who will join the team with a decorative coaching background in domestic and international cricket. Previously, Sharma got to work with Rishabh Pant, the present captain of LSG, during his early stage.
Throughout his coaching career, Abhay has worked with multiple star cricketers of Team India, including Pant, Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Dhruv Jurel, Avesh Khan, and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the junior level.
Abhay Sharma is among the coaching talents who have served the national team at the highest level of age-group cricket. The Delhi-born was part of India’s Under-19 support staff during the 2016, 2018, and 2020 U-19 World Cups.
Sharma served as the coach of multiple Team India squads
In 2018, when Sharma was the fielding coach of Under-19 India, they made history by winning the title under the leadership of Prithvi Shaw. Shubman Gill, Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma, Anukul Roy, and Ishan Porel were also among the integral parts of the trophy-winning team.
Apart from working with the India Under-19 squad, Abhay also worked with the India Women's National Cricket Team in 2021. During his tenure, Harleen Deol pulled off a stunning catch near the boundary rope to dismiss Amy Jones, which was one of the best frames for the fielding coach.
Abhay also worked as a head coach in international stage. He was appointed as the head coach for the Uganda National Cricket Team. Under his guidance, the team appeared at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.
LSG displayed some poor quality in fielding in the IPL 2025 season
Last season, LSG finished in seventh spot on the points table with 12 points in 14 matches. Apart from batting failures, the team had to suffer from some lacklustre show while fielding as well.
According to Cricbuzz, Lucknow Super Giants dropped 14 catches in the first 9 IPL 2025 games and missed 22 run-out chances as well, which were some of the worst stats produced by a fielding side in as many matches. Meanwhile, Jonty Rhodes served as the team's fielding coach from 2023 to 2025.
