Alabama baseball suffered its first mid-week loss since March 26, 2024, in a 14-4 beatdown from No. 12-ranked Southern Miss that ended in eight innings due to the run-rule.
“They kicked our tails tonight,” Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn said. “It’s time for us to regroup and get back to work. It’s a long season. We’ve just got to keep getting better.”
The Crimson Tide started out hot with two runs in the first inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly from third baseman Jason Torres. A couple of batters later, first baseman Luke Vaughn delivered an RBI single to give Alabama a 2-0 advantage.
However, the Golden Eagles were all over Crimson Tide starting pitcher JT Blackwood, tagging him for five runs in two innings of work. The first run Blackwood surrendered came in the bottom half of the first on an RBI single from left fielder Davis Gillespie to cut Alabama’s lead in half, making it a 2-1 ballgame.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Golden Eagles tacked on four more runs on a grand slam from right fielder Ben Higdon to give them a 5-2 lead. Connor Leham took over for Blackwood in the third inning and navigated around a lead-off single and an error from shortstop Justin Lebron, with some help from a 5-4-3 double play.
In the top of the fourth, the Crimson Tide made it a 5-4 game via a two-run home run from Vaughn off the scoreboard in left field. But it all went downhill for Alabama from there in the bottom half of the inning.
Leham remained in the game and walked back-to-back hitters. Then Samford transfer Evan Steckmesser replaced Leham on the mound and surrendered a perfectly placed bunt single to load the bases with nobody out.
Steckmesser then walked center fielder Joey Urban with the bases loaded to bring in a run, and Matthew Russo followed that up with a two-run single to extend the Golden Eagles’ lead to 8-4. A few batters later, Kyle Morrison launched the Golden Eagles’ second grand slam of the game to break things wide open, making it 12-4.
Bobby Alcock came in relief of Steckmesser and picked up the final two outs of the fourth inning to stop the bleeding.
“The game got away from us right there,” Vaughn said. “They kept rolling arm after arm, and it’s a lot more comfortable for them, you know, pitching in a 12-4 game versus a 5-4 game. So credit to them. They kicked our tails tonight.”
Alcock worked a scoreless fifth inning, then handed the ball over to freshman Luke Smyers for the bottom of the sixth inning. Smyersorked around a two-out single to put together a scoreless frame and came back out for the bottom of the seventh before walking the lead-off batter.
Fellow freshman Joe Chiarodo took over for Smyers and allowed an RBI single to Gillespie, extending the Golden Eagles’ lead to 13-4 and knocking on the door of a mercy rule.
Tate Robertson got the nod in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Crimson Tide and committed an error to allow the winning run to score and put the nail in the coffin.
The game went about as badly as it could have for the Crimson Tide, as the team committed three errors and the pitching was subpar.
“We didn’t make plays,” Vaughn said. “Just compounding mistakes, and against a good team, it’s not just not making errors. You’ve got to make plays. And we’ve got to do a better job.”
Pete Taylor Park has become the house of horrors for the Crimson Tide as the team has now lost seven straight in Hattiesburg dating back to 2013. The Crimson Tide will have to regroup, or it could be a long weekend at the Frisco Classic.
Alabama will face off against Iowa Friday night in Game 1 of the Frisco Classic, with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. CT exclusively on D1 Baseball.
