The No. 11-ranked Alabama men’s golf team surged through the final round of the Watersound Invitational, carding the tournament’s best closing score to finish eighth at 1-under-par 837 (285-278-274). The three-day event was held Feb. 16–18 in Panama City.
“Coming out of the winter offseason, I thought we began the tournament a little flat and sluggish, but I was pleased with what I saw today,” head coach Jay Seawell said.
In Round 1, junior Brycen Jones led the way for the Crimson Tide with a 1-under-par round of 69. Sophomore William Jennings continued where he left off in the fall, posting an even-par round of 70. Senior team captain Jonathan Griz and junior Jack Mitchell each put together a round of 73, 3 over par.
Junior Luke Powell shot a 75, 5-over-par round, but his score did not affect the Crimson Tides team score. After Day 1 of the tournament, the Crimson Tide stood alone in 10th place, 3 strokes back of Michigan State.
The Crimson Tide also had three players competing in the tournament induvaudly including sophomore Michael Crocker, junior Tristin Wisener and graduate student Connor Brown. Crocker shot a 2-under-par round of 68, Wisener finished Round 1 with a 72, 2-over-par, and Brown put together a 3-over-par round of 73.
On Day 2 of the tournament, Mitchell led the charge for the Crimson Tide, as he birdied three of the first five holes and ended up carding a 4-under-par round of 66. Jennings shot a 1-under-par round of 69 and Griz shot a 70, an even-par round.
Jones carded a 73, good for a 3-over-par round, and Powell shot a 75, 5-over-par. After Round 2, the Crimson Tide moved up the leaderboards to ninth place in the team event. As for the golfers competing individually, Crimson Tide Brown had the best showing, shooting a 2-under-par 68. Wisener shot 2-over-par for a round of 72 and Crocker ended up shooting a round of 74, 4-over-par.
On the third and final day of the tournament, Powell had the best round among Crimson Tide golfers, shooting 4-under-par 66 to finish in 48th place individually. Jennings finished out his tournament with a 2-under-par round of 68, finishing in 12th place, the highest among Crimson Tide golfers for the tournament.
Jones and Griz each shot even-par rounds of 70, with Jones finishing in 38th place and Griz finishing in 42nd place. Mitchell finished in 29th place and shot a 1-over-par round of 71 in Round 3.
“I am proud of the way our guys played in the final round,” Seawell said. “I thought we dealt with some adversity early in the tournament, but responded well in tough conditions today.”
Crocker finished in 48th place with a 2-over-par final round of 72. Brown ended up in 48th place, concluding his tournament with a 5-over-par round of 75, and Wisener finished in 76th place with a shot of 11-over-par 81 in round 3.
“We are going to have to build off the way we finished and try to figure out why we started slow, which was a little surprising,” Seawell said. “We are going to work on those things between now and our next tournament. But overall, I’m happy with the way that we finished.”
Alabama returns to the course March 7–9, traveling to Ponte Vedra to compete in The Hayt as the Crimson Tide looks to build on its late-round momentum.
