IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — A man was robbed after arranging to buy a car through a market site, only to find an armed robber instead of the vehicle.
How can you protect yourself in these situations? News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with the Irondequoit Police Department on how they are keeping people safe.
The police department has set up e-commerce exchange safety zones in front of the station. These zones are monitored by surveillance cameras 24/7 and are well-lit for safety.
Irondequoit Chief of Police Scott Peters said officers frequently coming in and out of the station act as a deterrent to potential criminals.
You don’t have to sign up to use the area, and you don’t have to let IPD know you’re coming. Peters said the safety zones are designed to keep people safe and provide peace of mind during transactions.
“It’s a way for us to provide a nice safe space for people to exchange anything that you bought on social media,” said Peters. “A lot of times on Facebook marketplace or if you’re reaching out like you know the old days through a newspaper ad, it’s a way people can actually feel safe coming right here in front of the police department front doors.”
Peters mentioned that setting up these zones came at a low cost, requiring only the installation of signs.
Peters said people use the safe zone daily and there have been no issues with sales conducted within the zones.
