With Payton now giving up playcalling to Davis Webb, he and George have a chance to do even more together as the Broncos aim to win a Super Bowl this season after falling one game shy of the big game.
As it stands today, Paton is entering the final year of his current deal, and there’s been speculation from other national media folks about the Minnesota Vikings potential interest in Paton returning, but if Payton has any say in it, that won’t happen who pounded the table publicly for the Broncos GM to get an extension.
“I have already,” Payton said. “It’s overdue. I say that respectfully to the process, but he and I have a great working relationship. So my job wouldn’t be as fun or as exciting if he wasn’t a part of it. That should be something that gets handled quickly.”
Payton’s word carries weight in the hallways of Broncos Park, and an extension for one of the best talent evaluators in the league should be coming soon. With the NFL Combine taking up the Broncos time right now, Paton’s focus has been on the next process as the team evaluates needs ahead of NFL Free Agency in March and the NFL Draft in April.
“Oh yeah, we’re just so busy this time of year,” Paton said. “The season went longer, which is cool, but the offseason gets condensed. We’ve been rolling. That is really cool, but it will happen when it happens. I’m not too worried about it. We have a lot going on this offseason. We have a busy offseason.”
Not only do they have a busy offseason, but Paton and Payton face arguably their biggest offseason together after they got so close to a Super Bowl in January.
