A24 has released the first look at its upcoming horror filmBackrooms. The film, based on the internet Creepypasta (an urban legend spread and augmented by the internet) by YouTuber Kane Parsons, is set for release on May 29.
The film will bring the indie YouTube horror series to life, adapting it from a small-scale project to a high-budget feature film. Parsons will make his directorial debut with A24 at only 20 years old, making him the youngest person to lead an A24 production ever. Starring in the upcoming film will be Hollywood stars Renate Reinsve, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Avan Jogia.

The short nine-minute video depicted a cameraman falling through the ground of our reality into an ominous new one. The new reality, known as the "Backrooms," is an empty abyss resembling familiar barren areas—like an office space or shipping facility. The flickering fluorescent lights and seemingly endless emptiness made for a deeply unsettling yet revolutionary video for horror. While Parsons wasn't the original creator of the Creepypasta, he is widely credited with popularizing it and building the foundation for what the legend has become today. Since its release, his video has garnered over 71 million views.
