Two suburban daycare workers are facing multiple charges after numerous incidents involving children in their care, according to authorities.
The workers – 23-year-old Izabella Thompson, of Chicago, and 36-year-old Jessica Murillo, of Morton Grove – are accused of battering at least seven children between Nov. 3 and Nov. 19 at A Mother’s Touch Daycare in Des Plaines.
The accusations include striking one in the face with a notebook, spraying another with water, dragging one across the floor by his foot and striking another with an open hand multiple times, the Des Plaines Police Department said.
According to authorities, the investigation came after a parent went to the daycare’s directors to report that a child had been allegedly sprayed in the face with water in the classroom by one of the providers. The daycare “immediately launched an internal investigation, reviewed surveillance footage, contacted DCFS” and suspended both workers.
During their investigation, however, they discovered the alleged incidents actually involved much more.
Video evidence allegedly showed Murillo and Thompson “battering multiple children” and daycare directors, along with the parents of one child, brought the case to police.
Police later said their investigation found seven male children between the ages of four and five, were battered by either Murillo or Thompson.
“While the nature of the contact varied, no children required medical attention or suffered severe physical injuries,” the Des Plaines Police Department said.
Murillo was charged with three felony counts of aggravated battery and 12 misdemeanor counts of battery after police said she struck a child in the face with a notebook, dragged a 4-year-old boy across the floor by his foot, causing him to hit his head on the ground. and she hit another child in the face with an open hand multiple times.
Thompson also faces four misdemeanor counts of battery over allegations she “Making “made physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature.”
Police noted the daycare was “fully cooperative” in its investigation and “assisted investigators by providing the information needed to obtain formal charges.”
“Our hearts go out to the children and families affected by this troubling case,” Des Plaines Police Chief David Anderson said in a statement. “This was a painful breach of trust by individuals entrusted with the care of young children. I want to thank the directors and staff of A Mother’s Touch Daycare for acting quickly, alerting authorities, and fully cooperating with our investigators”.
Murillo is expected to appear in court Wednesday, while Thompson is not scheduled to go before a judge until March 30.
The daycare said both Murillo and Thompson “are no longer employed by our school.”
“The safety and wellbeing of the children in our care is always our top priority,” the daycare said in a statement. “We take this matter very seriously. As soon as we became aware of conduct that did not align with our standards, we immediately removed the staff members involved and notified the appropriate authorities, including the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. We are fully cooperating with the ongoing review and will continue doing so until the investigation is complete.”
