Sightings of Waymo vehicles in Chicago were reported on social media this week, begging locals to question whether the autonomous taxi company is making moves to expand service into the Windy City.
A video of Waymo vehicles unloading from a truck in Chicago gained a lot of attention on social media Tuesday, with many users on X quick to point out one of the autonomous vehicles was illegally parked in a bike lane.
The video, shared by X user @landon20s, shows at least two Waymo vehicles unloading on the 100 block of West Kinzie Street in Chicago’s River North neighborhood.

Despite Waymo’s recent appearances in the Windy City, a proposal to allow the use of self-driving taxis in Illinois has yet to gain approval from state legislators.
Illinois Rep. Kam Buckner’s introduced a proposal earlier this month that would start a pilot program in Cook County, plus likely Springfield in Sangamon County and Madison or St. Clair counties for the self-driving taxis to launch in the Lincoln State.
“I think the only way for us to have autonomous vehicles happen with us and not to us is to do what we’re doing here: take the time, do the pilot, and figure out where we want to go as a state,” said Buckner.
While the road to autonomous taxis in Chicago is not yet fully paved, Waymo is not the only company in the industry with eyes seemingly set on Chicago.

Despite the “da cab” social media post, Chicago was not listed as one the cities Rototaxi is planning to roll out in next, according to a social media post from the company.
