Putting together a soundtrack for Melania proved difficult for the creative team behind the controversial documentary, as many iconic musicians opted to stay hands-off despite cries that the film is not political.
Among them is Grace Jones, the boundary-pushing singer, model, and actress who rose to fame in the late '70s and became a defining face of '80s pop culture.
She is among several other musicians and bands, including Prince and Guns N' Roses— whose members are split politically—who chose to pass on the film. Now, Melania producer Marc Beckman is speaking out about the struggle to score the film, following claims that the film didn't properly license the music used. In an interview with Variety, Beckman discussed music licensing after Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood demanded they remove a song he composed.
View this post on Instagram"Guns N’ Roses was definitely a disappointment for us; we all have a lot of respect for Guns N’ Roses," Beckman explained. "And then there was a song that we wanted to use from Grace Jones; obviously, also a tremendous amount of respect for her. She apparently couldn’t get over the political hurdle, notwithstanding the fact that the film is not a political film. So that was disappointing, too."
He continued, "It’s disappointing when people put politics so far ahead, and that happened a little bit with the film, for sure."
While several artists said no, the Radiohead guitarist-turned-film composer found out music he scored for The Phantom Thread was included in the documentary. He and director Paul Thomas Anderson demanded it be removed and publicly distanced themselves from the film.
Due to the licensing rights for the song, it likely won't be removed—but, according to Beckman, there are no hard feelings. He called Radiohead one of his favorite bands and admitted, "I’ll still remain a fan and listen to their music every single day."
Despite struggling to secure several preferred acts, saying it "wasn't easy," the Melania producer did manage to license music from several notable artists, including Michael Jackson, Tears for Fears, Aretha Franklin, and the Rolling Stones.
Beckman told the publication, "It’s incredible that we’re able to get the Rolling Stones and Elvis and Michael Jackson."
