GENEVA, N.Y. — The William Smith lacrosse team is gearing up for a promising season with aspirations of clinching a national title. After nine consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, the team is set to open its season on Wednesday.
“I really believe they have the makings of a championship team,” said Anne Phillips, head coach of the Herons.
The team boasts 19 returning players, including two preseason All-Americans, and holds a national ranking to start the year, starting at #7 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll. However, Phillips emphasized that preseason rankings are not their focus. “The only ranking that matters is the one in May,” she said.
Phillips, who led Franklin and Marshall to a national title in 2007, has brought a winning culture to Geneva. Senior captain Delaney Cassidy saying, “I think just building a culture of excellence. Our coaches really emphasize bringing everything we’ve got to practice every single day. And it’s really paid off in the past three years.”
Seniors like Cassidy have experienced two Final Four appearances and a Sweet 16 showing. Janey Sypec, a preseason All-American defender, expressed her drive to go further this season, “We would have loved to go to the Final Four again and further, but it’s just fuel to the fire.”
Senior defender Lily Kuhn shared her hopes for the season, focusing on confidence and handling high-pressure situations. “Confidence, I think at the end of the day, when you get to Final Four games, and they’re so high intensity, and you’ve flown down to Virginia, your whole family’s there. It’s being able to handle that pressure. Know that pressure is a privilege,” Kuhn said.
The Herons are focused on more than just rankings and accolades. Their eyes are set on victory in May. They will face Geneseo in their first game at 5 p.m. in Geneva.
