Team USA hockey star Quinn Hughes is looking forward to attending the State of the Union address in the wake of President Donald Trump’s controversial locker room phone call.
“We’re excited to go,” Quinn, 26, said in an interview alongside his brother Jack Hughes on Good Morning America on Tuesday, February 24. “It’s going to be special for us.”
Quinn, Jack, 24, and other members of the Team USA gold medal-winning men’s hockey team are expected to be in attendance at the State of the Union on Tuesday night.
The decision to head to D.C. for the address comes after the Team USA women’s hockey team, who also won gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, declined an invitation.
USA Women’s Hockey State of the Union Invite Provided ‘Difficult’ Problem
Quinn insisted he and his teammates are “extremely happy” for the Team USA women winning gold, and acknowledged the ongoing controversy involving both American squads.
“There’s a lot going on on social media right now surrounding our team and their team,” Quinn said. “In the last couple summers, we did a lot of training with them and got to know [them] really well.”
USA Hockey announced that the women’s team would not be attending the State of the Union in a statement on Monday, February 23.
“We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal-winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement,” the statement read. “They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment.”

A source told the Associated Press that the women’s team didn’t receive the invitation until the evening of Sunday, February 22, which made it “difficult to change their travel plans.”
The team’s decision came on the heels of Trump, 79, taking a perceived slight at them during a celebratory phone call with the men’s team after their victory on Sunday.
“We have medals for you guys. I must tell you, we‘re going to have to bring the women’s team,” Trump said on a phone call facilitated by FBI director Kash Patel, who partied with the Americans in the locker room.
Trump added that he would “probably be impeached” if he didn’t also invite the Team USA women.
Jack and Quinn Hughes’ Mom Ellen Responds to Team USA Hockey Controversy
The comments earned plenty of laughter from the American men, which has sparked major criticism.
Jack addressed all of the chatter on Monday night, telling the Daily Mail, “Everyone is giving us backlash for all the social media stuff today.”
“People are so negative out there and they are just trying to find a reason to put people down and make something out of almost nothing,” Hughes continued. “People are so negative about things. I think everyone in that locker room knows how much we support them, how proud we are of them and we know the same way we feel about them, they feel about us.”
In addressing the Team USA women skipping the State of the Union, Jack said, “They’ve got busy schedules, too.”
