The couple’s two previous eggs of the season were breached by a raven Friday, Jan. 30, and lost.

Less than two weeks later, on Wednesday, Feb. 11, Sandy Steers, the executive director of Friends of Big Bear Valley — which operates a web camera focused on the birds, died.

Jennifer Voisard, the group’s media and website manager, said that despite the recent losses, the appearance of a third egg brings renewed hope.

“Team morale is good,” Voisard said. “We’ve really pulled together, and we’ve been sharing a lot about Sandy, and doing this work for her has helped a lot.”

“The last few days, she’s (Jackie) been leaving us wondering, will she or won’t she?”  Voisard said. “And today she answered that question.”

The Friends’ Facebook post announcing the egg’s arrival received over 5,000 likes and 500 comments in the first 10 minutes after publication.

Since the organization installed the two cameras that stream a 24/7 feed, the two eagles have attained worldwide fame. The Friends has roughly 2.4 million social media followers, including more than 1 million on its main Facebook page, and several fan-run Facebook and Instagram accounts.

“It’s a phenomenon we can’t quite explain,” Voisard said. “There are other nests out there with other communities around them that are not like this.”
