John Wheeler, a character actor and singer known for his roles on Star Trek, The Dukes of Hazzard and more TV shows, has died. He was 95.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of his death on Tuesday, February 24. His daughter, Johanna, told the outlet that Wheeler died on February 6 at his home in Claremont, California.
Wheeler made his television debut as a guest star on the NBC series Star Trek in the season 2 episode “Journey to Babel,” which aired in November 1967. He was unrecognizable in heavy makeup as Tellarites politician Ambassador Gav, who had a memorable run-in with Vulcan adversary Sarek (Mark Lenard).
Wheeler went on to land a recurring role on The Dukes of Hazzard during seasons 4 and 5 in 1982, portraying Hazzard County general store owner Mr. Rhuebottom in four episodes.

Wheeler also appeared in multiple episodes of Green Acres from 1969 to 1971, Bonanza from 1968 to 1971, The Brady Bunch from 1970 to 1974 and The Odd Couple from 1971 to 1975. His single episode TV credits included Mission: Impossible and Columbo in 1972, Happy Days in 1974, Gunsmoke in 1975, The Waltons in 1976, The Rockford Files, CHiPs and Rhoda in 1978, Dallas in 1982, Simon and Simon in 1983, The Golden Girls in 1988, Night Court in 1989, ER in 1994 and Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1998.
Wheeler’s film credits included 1969’s Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here, 1971’s Support Your Local Gunfighter, 1974’s Mame, Newman’s Law and Big Bad Mama, 1978’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1979’s The North Avenue Irregulars and The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again and 1995’s Apollo 13.
Wheeler’s final onscreen role was the 2005 TV movie Meet the Santas, in which he played Mr. Claus.
Wheeler also appeared on Broadway, making his debut in 1961 in the musical comedy The Happiest Girl in the World. He went on to star in musicals such as 1962’s Kean, 1964’s Café Crown and I Had a Ball and 1966’s Sweet Charity.
In addition to his film, TV and stage roles, Wheeler was known for his 1971 choreographed musical commercial for McDonald’s titled “Grab a Bucket and Mop.” Portraying a manager at the fast food restaurant, Wheeler sang alongside John Amos, Robert Ridgely and more.
Outside of acting, Wheeler was a singer who performed with the New York City Opera and was a member of the Grammy-winning Belafonte Singers and the DeCormier Singers.
Born in Corsicana, Texas, in June 1930, Wheeler graduated with a music degree from California’s University of the Pacific in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army before pursuing acting.
Wheeler was preceded in death by his wife, Helen. The couple were married from 1959 until her 2013 death.
Wheeler is survived by his daughter, sons Christopher and Timothy, and grandson Brandon.
