The commander of Internal Security in Latakia governorate, Brig. Gen. Abdul Aziz Hilal al-Ahmad, confirmed the killing of the leader of “Saraya al-Jawad,” Bashar Abdullah Abu Raqiya, along with two of the group’s commanders, during a security operation on the Syrian coast.
According to a statement published by the Ministry of Interior on its Facebook page today, Tuesday, February 24, a “double” operation was carried out in the areas of Beit A’louni and Bsania in the countryside of Jableh, a coastal city in Latakia governorate in northwestern Syria, following several days of surveillance.
Brig. Gen. al-Ahmad said the operation targeted one of the group’s main strongholds, resulting in his death and the killing of two senior members, in addition to the arrest of six other fighters.
Forces also detonated a warehouse containing weapons and explosive devices belonging to the group.
Al-Ahmad added that one member of the Special Tasks Forces was killed during the operation, while another sustained minor injuries.
He said the operation is part of a series of security campaigns conducted by the Internal Security Command against cells it described as threatening security and stability, stressing that efforts will continue to “cleanse” areas of armed elements and ensure public safety across the governorate.
The Syrian al-Ikhbariya channel reported that the clashes took place within the framework of an operation targeting what it described as “remnants of the former regime,” noting that one Internal Security member was killed during the confrontations.
In a related context, local news pages in Syria’s coastal region reported civilian casualties, including women, as a result of shelling that targeted homes in the village of Kankaro in the Jableh countryside.
The “Syrian Coast 24” page reported “news of civilian martyrs,” without providing a confirmed toll.
Enab Baladi was unable to independently verify the information circulated by local sources.
Areas in the Jableh countryside have witnessed intermittent security tensions, amid conflicting accounts regarding the nature and background of the ongoing operations.
Previous operation
On December 24, 2025, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced what it described as a “specialized” security operation targeting a “Saraya al-Jawad” cell in the Jableh countryside, stating that the cell was affiliated with former regime army officer Suhail al-Hassan.
At the time, Latakia Internal Security commander Abdul Aziz Hilal al-Ahmad said, according to the Interior Ministry’s Facebook page, that the cell was “involved in carrying out assassinations, field executions, detonating explosive devices, and targeting Internal Security and Syrian army positions.”
The ministry added that the targeted cell had been preparing to attack New Year’s celebrations, posing what it described as a threat to civilian safety.
It said security forces had surrounded the area and the house where the “criminals,” as it described them, were barricaded. The cell members refused to surrender, leading to clashes that lasted about an hour, resulting in the arrest of one member and the “neutralization” of three others, while four security personnel sustained minor injuries.
