Ben Johnson and Ryan Poles Had Very Different Things to Say About DJ Moore

DJ Moore has made it clear that he wants to stick around and keep playing ball for the Chicago Bears.

However, it isn’t that simple.

As teammate Patrick Flowers underscored in his DJ Moore 2025 snapshot, the Bears wide receiver has a pricy contract that complicates things for a front office looking for cap space and spending flexibility. Moore possesses a $28.5 million cap number, which chews up roughly 9.1 percent of the team’s available cap space. Restucturing his deal by finagling with his $23.5 million base salary could create up to $16 million worth of space. Considering the team’s needs at various other positions, I can understand why the front office would explore scenarios that do not include Moore on next year’s roster.

But with that being said, I’m not sure that the two most important figures at Halas Hall are quite on the same page when it comes to DJ Moore’s future. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson and General Manager Ryan Poles made some interesting comments when discussing Moore’s future and present value.

Bears head coach, GM discuss DJ Moore in very different ways

ESPN’s Courtney Cronin shares the perspective from Bears GM Ryan Poles:

Ryan Poles on DJ Moore: “We want him here. We thinking highly of him … But this is the time now where we have to look at all the scenarios that will allow us to put the best team out there…he’s a guy we want here but we have to look at all the scenarios.”

This feels like the type of thing that would be said by a general manager who is open to having conversations about moving a player. Poles saying “we want him here” while also saying that “we have to look at all the scenarios” feels telling. At a minimum, it is hard to come away from Poles’ statements feeling as if Moore’s spot on this roster is secure. This isn’t to say that Poles is actively shopping Moore. However, it seems as if it is on the table should the two sides be unable to come to an agreement on a restructured contract.

Cronin also has Ben Johnson’s commentary, with the head coach’s words being more focused on DJ Moore’s value to the team in 2025:

“It was immense. He probably knew all the roles of the receivers better than anybody else we had in that room. The X, the Z, F, it really didn’t matter. He was a guy we knew we could count on. If guys go down, he can step in. There really wasn’t anything we shied away from in terms of the route tree that he could or could not do. I feel like the versatility is something that screams as you, the intelligence screams at you and as Ryan alluded to in our last press conference, just the toughness, the durability. When you talk about a 17-plus game season, that’s where a player like that is really, really valuable.”

It is jarring to read Ben Johnson’s glowing remarks about DJ Moore after reading how Bears GM Ryan Poles talked about the receiver. Clearly, Johnson values what Moore brings to the table in terms of being a weapon in his offense. Can you blame him? Moore lined up in the slot, out wide, and in the backfield for Johnson. He even through a touchdown pass last year. Moore went from being the top banana in Chicago’s offense to being a role player — and didn’t flinch. Now that I’m thinking about it, perhaps that could be a selling point for a possible trade.

Questions about DJ Moore’s future with the team will continue to pop up a firm decision is made one way or another. A cut seems highly unlikely and would be financially irresponsible because of what it would do to the cap. But a trade or a restructured contract appear to be on the table as alternative options. Stay tuned.
