It goes without saying that once a fish has been given a grease bath it can’t grow to be a trophy. Practicing catch and release is one of the best ways to increase your future chances of catching bigger, trophy size fish. By letting the small ones go, they will grow to become the next generation of big ones.
Catch and release also benefits all future anglers of a fishery. This becomes especially important in heavily pressured lakes. A 25 fish limit of panfish may not seem like a lot, but if just 100 anglers get their limits 10 times a summer, they will remove 25,000 fish from the fishery. That’s a lot. Practicing catch and release, or at least limiting harvest to just a meal’s worth ensures quality fishing opportunities for more anglers, which is good for the angling community.
Any fisheries biologist will tell you that the older a fish is, the more time it has to collect pollutants, toxins, and chemicals like mercury and PCB’s. For that reason, eating larger predatory fish is currently not recommended by many state fisheries agencies. By releasing the largest and oldest fish anglers catch, they’re reducing their potential to consume toxins and at the same time allowing the most productive spawners to return to the water. Anglers looking for a meal should focus on panfish and the small end of legal-sized gamefish; they haven’t had nearly the time to absorb environmental toxins as the bigger, older fish
Russian River- The steelhead fishin’ on the Russian River has been fair at best, even though the fishin’ conditions are decent. As of Monday, there just isn’t that many fish in the river right now. With the storm that rolled in on last Tuesday, maybe it was enough to blow the river out for another run to come up.
If you are blessed enough to catch one or two, you will have to really work for it. With that being said, here is what has been working best. Fishing anywhere between Pieta Creek and south of Dry Creek is all good. The anglers fishin’ from banks need to cover a lot of water. Try drifting a spin in glo with eggs. Drift boaters are doing the best mainly because they can easily cover the most water. Boaters have been side drifting, draggin’ eggs and fish pills. Also some have been pulling along a hot shot or wiggle wart. Good Luck!
Clear Lake: I know of some very good anglers that are having a difficult time hooking into bass right now. Fishin’ on Clear Lake is still very slow. Even fishermen that have been trying their luck with live bait (minnows), are reporting that you have to cover a lot of water to find bass that willing to bite. With the lake water temperature still running in the mid to upper 40’s the bass are shivering. They are not willing to use much energy to chaise after lures and bait.
Once the water temperature kicks up just another 4-6 degrees the bass will start to go into their pre-spawn mode. With a few days of beautiful spring like weather it will take just a few days before the best rated bass fishery in the United States will get it goin’ on!
Blue Lakes: The trout fishin’ on the upper Blue Lake has been fair-ish. Not many anglers trying their luck. Both trollers and the gang on the shore have hooked in to a couple nice trout. The Upper Blue Lake has not received a trout plant for a few weeks. And, currently there is not any trout plants scheduled.
Lake Pillsbury: The big news regarding Lake Pillsbury is that the roads are in very bad shape. The word is that Lake County will be grading their road within the next week or so. The only fishing report I have received is that there has been some shore fishermen that have been catching trout off the bottom using, night crawlers. The concern is that the rains we had earlier this week, will slow up the bite. There are no bass being caught right now. Oh, by-the-way, the lake is full!
