Entering the 2025-26 season, senior guard Seth Trimble already had endeared himself to the UNC basketball community.
Even as the NCAA was setting new records for major college transfers every year, Trimble became the modern-day rarity — a four-year player for the Tar Heels. Only two other seniors, in the entire 18-team Atlantic Coast Conference, are on track to graduate this year from the same universities they initially chose as high school prospects.
About two weeks ago, Trimble further cemented his place in Carolina history with one of the most unforgettable, game-winning, last-second shots in the world-famous Carolina-Duke rivalry. His 3-pointer from near the right corner at the Smith Center, directly in front of the UNC bench, gave the Tar Heels a 71-68 win over the now-No. 1 Blue Devils, meaning their most valuable resume-builder of the entire regular season.
Now Trimble, who is most famous for his stunning athleticism, intense defense and electrifying dunks, has added an opening tip-to-final buzzer, two-way masterpiece to his Carolina storybook, as well.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound slashing driver from Wisconsin scored a career-high 30 points and spearheaded a passionate defensive effort as No. 18 UNC edged No. 24 Louisville 77-74 Monday night in Chapel Hill.
Matched against an extremely talented Louisville backcourt led by superstar freshman Mikel Brown Jr., veteran wing scorer Ryan Conwell and senior sharpshooter Isaac McKneely, Trimble nevertheless proved — for one night, at least — to be the best both-ends performer on the floor, at any position.
Trimble played a game-high 37 minutes, converted a highly efficient 11-for-16 from the field, grabbed four rebounds, distributed a game-high four assists and made seven of his 11 free throw attempts, including all four in the final two minutes to help hold off a late Louisville surge.
While Louisville’s guards often settled for long-range jumpers, Trimble never stopped trying to get to the basket. Meanwhile, as the Tar Heels pounded the paint and attacked the rim offensively, they also — led by Trimble — were relentless with their pressure on the 3-point line defensively.
In the end, Carolina’s inside-out approach led to 54 percent field goal accuracy, whereas the Cardinals connected on only 39 percent. Inspired by the consistent aggression of Trimble and junior center Henri Veesaar, the Heels dominated the points-in-the-paint category by a whopping 40-24 margin.
With only two home games remaining, against Virginia Tech and Clemson, UNC has a chance to finish the season 18-0 at the Smith Center. The Tar Heels haven’t been perfect on their home court since 2017, which also happens to be the last time they won the NCAA title.
