Sebastian Bach Reveals How He Landed Iconic Role as Gil on ‘Gilmore Girls’

Sebastian Bach’s career has taken him all over.  The former Skid Row frontman has gone from rock arenas to the Broadway stage to a recurring role on one of the most beloved television series of the 2000s, Gilmore Girls.

In a February 2026 interview with The Charismatic Voice podcast, the legendary rocker told host Elizabeth Zharoff that the creators of the beloved TV series came calling for him after his successful run in Jekyll & Hyde on Broadway. He credited all of the opportunities to Atlantic Records execs, who recognized that his voice transcended rock and roll.

“Atlantic Records was the label that put out all the Skid Row records with me,” Bach, 57, said on the podcast. “They're the ones that got me in Jekyll & Hyde … Frank Wildhorn, the composer, came to them and said, ‘We want a rock star to play Jekyll & Hyde.’ And I was their first call, and I couldn't believe it. I go, ‘Do you have the right phone number?’”

Bach said he was told by Atlantic Records executive Jason Flom that the way he sang the Skid Row classics "I Remember You” and “18 and Life” sounded like “Dr. Jekyll,” and the songs “Monkey Business” and “Youth Gone Wild” were “Mr. Hyde.”

Bach recalled Flom telling him, “They want two different voices in one guy. … That's you."

Bach played Dr. Henry Jekyll in the Broadway production of Jekyll & Hyde for four months, starting in June 2000, per Playbill. Gilmore Girls premiered on the WB in October 2000, just as Bach’s Broadway role ended.

On the podcast, Bach told Zharoff,  “But then Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Dan Palladino, who write the show, they went to Atlantic Records and said, ‘We want a rock star on the Gilmore Girls. And they go, ‘Sebastian Bach.’ I go, ‘Cool.’ I guess I was the go-to guy for a couple years there. And so they called me on the phone. They couldn't believe that I was a Broadway actor. That impressed them big time there. Because obviously, on TV you can try it until you get it right. Broadway you get one shot, one shot.  So they were very impressed by that. So that got me in the door. Broadway got me onto Gilmore Girls.”

Sebastian Bach was honored to appear on 'Gilmore Girls'

Bach played Gil, a bandmate in Lane’s (Keiki Agena) rock band Hep Alien in 13 episodes of Gilmore Girls from 2003 to 2007. He also appeared in the show’s four-part revival, A Year in the Life, in 2016.

Speaking with Us Weekly, Bach said it was an "honor” to appear on Gilmore Girls. He also called out the Gwen Stefani song “Hollaback Girl”  as his favorite tune Hep Alien performed on the show.

“Everybody thinks that’s hilarious,” he said. “When we did that shoot, the director, Dan Palladino, was like, ‘Hey, do you want to do a key lower because it’s Gwen Stefani and you’re a dude?’ I was like, ‘Who you talking to? We don’t change the keys! We don’t do that in Hep Alien! We do it in the original key. That’s the way we roll.’”

Bach looked back on his iconic career in a 2024 post on Facebook. “I consider myself so lucky to have the experiences that I have had in this life. Appearing on the TV show the @gilmoregirls was one of the highlights of my career,” he wrote. “The friendships that were made on this show are lifelong.”
