Van Halen Legend Questions Adding New Singer for Unheard Eddie Tracks

Michael Anthony weighed in on the upcoming Van Halen project that Alex Van Halen has been teasing—and he shared some advice to his former bandmate.

Amid rumors that an upcoming album will feature previously unreleased music by late guitarist Eddie Van Halen, Anthony, 71, told Cleveland’s WNCX he thinks the best way to go would be an all-instrumental tribute to the legendary guitarist, who died in 2020 at age 65.

"The way I personally feel about it is, if they wanted to do it justice, [the best idea would be] to just finish it up as a great instrumental nod to Eddie," the veteran VH bassist said, per Ultimate Classic Rock.

Anthony continued, "You know, because getting a new singer in there, we're not forming a new band, and then you've got to work on lyrics and all that stuff. And who knows when anything would be put out at that point."

Anthony was the original bassist for Van Halen from 1974 to 2006. He performed on the band’s first 11 albums but is not involved in the current project fronted by Alex Van Halen.

In an interview posted on the  YouTube channel KazaGastao, Alex Van Halen addressed his plan to add new artists to the unheard Van Halen material.

“Many people have asked, what about releasing unreleased stuff? Well, we're not gonna release it in its embryonic form because it wouldn't make any sense," he explained. "It has to be of the quality and the level of where we left it. These are recordings that were going to be the next record, and that ... stopped because [Ed] didn't live that long.”

Alex revealed that he has been working with Toto frontman Steve Lukather, “who was a good friend of Ed’s," on “putting a record together.” He added that the “drums, the guitar, and the bass are already in there.”

Alex Van Halen also revealed that he approached Bad Company legend Paul Rodgers to perform vocals on the album, but was humbly turned down. He also mentioned Robert Plant as a possible vocalist on his wish list.

"I'm 72,” Alex added. “We gotta find somebody in that age group who was exposed to the same musical experience that we have. Otherwise, it doesn't have the depth.”

Michael Anthony recently talked about the “bond” the Van Halen brothers had that no one could break. "Even from the beginning of Van Halen, it was always the brothers,” he told the Talkin' Rock With Meltdown podcast in February 2026.

"Because Eddie and Al had this bond that [was] unlike any bond I had ever seen brothers have — musically and also as human beings," Anthony shared. "And so people naturally say it's the brothers and everybody else. But they always supported one another in anything that they did. And so, you know what?! Thinking about it, I guess it was the brothers and everybody else."
