In a first for Formula 1, the Australian Grand Prix Corporation has announced that Turn 6 at Albert Park will be officially named in honour of two of the sport’s most prominent women currently working on the pit wall: Laura Mueller and Hannah Schmitz.
The sweeping left-hander at the Melbourne track will stand next month as a tribute not just to their individual achievements, but to the broader push for visibility and recognition of women in motorsport engineering and strategy.
The initiative – aptly titled ‘In Her Corner’ – is a collaboration between Engineers Australia and the AGPC. It marks the first time in F1 history that a section of a circuit has been named to honour women working within the championship.
A Corner for the Trailblazers
Mueller, now race engineer at Haas F1 Team, made history last year as the first full-time female race engineer in Formula 1, becoming the voice in Esteban Ocon’s ear on race weekends – calmly decoding chaos at 300km/h.
Standing trackside in Melbourne, her name will be attached to a corner thousands of fans will watch drivers attack lap after lap.
“The ‘In Her Corner’ initiative promotes the importance of ‘if you can see it, you can be it,’ so the more we can all do to shine a light on the overall achievement of women in engineering is a great thing,” said Mueller.
“To be a part of this acknowledgement so early on in my Formula 1 career is an honour, and I hope it motivates girls and young adults to pursue a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
“It’s important to recognise women’s accomplishments in motorsport so far, and it’s great to be alongside Hannah for this.”
If Mueller represents a new chapter in F1 engineering, Schmitz embodies sustained excellence at the sharp end of race-day decision-making.
As head of race strategy at Red Bull Racing, the 40-year-old Briton has played a pivotal role in countless victories and title fights, becoming one of the most respected strategic minds in the paddock.
When the tension spikes and the stopwatch becomes unforgiving, she’s often the one calculating the split-second calls that decide championships.
“I absolutely love my job and if you have the privilege of that choice also then make sure it’s the right role for you. I was always curious about how things work and loved cars,” said Schmitz.

“At school I had some amazing support and encouragement from teachers that opened my eyes to the world of engineering, they were my inspiration.
“For me it has been an absolute honour to represent the team on the podium.
“In Qatar last season, it was incredible to be in the fight for the driver championship, witnessing the way everyone came together as a team was something very special to be a part of.”
Celebrating International Women’s Day
The naming of Turn 6 is only part of the story. On Thursday March 5, ahead of race weekend, ‘In Her Corner’ will host an exclusive event at Albert Park to celebrate International Women’s Day – which in 2026 falls on March 8, race day itself in Melbourne.
The event will be hosted by Ruth Buscombe, now an F1 presenter and formerly head of race strategy at Sauber, and will feature a panel including Mueller and Schmitz, Aston Martin driver ambassador Jess Hawkins, Australian F1 Academy drivers Aiva Anagnostiadis and Joanne Ciconte, rally champion Molly Taylor, and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

For a sport often defined by split times and split-second margins, the symbolism is powerful. Turn 6 will no longer be just another braking zone on the run down to Lakeside Drive; it will be a reminder that Formula 1’s future is being shaped not only by the drivers gripping the wheel, but also by the engineers and strategists guiding them.
And when the lights go out in Melbourne, as the field hurtles toward that now-historic corner, fans may find themselves reflecting on a different kind of apex – one where progress, recognition and representation meet at full throttle.
