The Voice premiered its 29th season tonight with coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and John Legend and it’s labeled The Voice: Battle of Champions as all three coaches have previously won at least one season.
Each coach will get 10 singers on their team to total 30 artists, a big drop from the 48 featured last season, but there will be a new twist. The coach that gets the most three-chair turn artists on their team will earn an advantage.
The coach who gets the most artists who’ve been awarded a three-chair turn earns a “Super Steal” for the Battles. This coveted prize can only be used once and trumps any other coach’s attempt to steal, guaranteeing a win.

The Voice Blind Auditions usually have a singer or two with an intriguing background and Monday night was no different as Bay Simpson shared in his video package that “my mom’s dad’s aunt Minnie Mae is Elvis Presley’s grandmother. As near as I can figure that makes the 26-year-old from Muscle Shoals, AL, Elvis’ second cousin once removed.
“I don’t know what that makes me, but I’m not making it up,” Bay says. “It’s really cool to be related to the King because I love rock ‘n’ roll. It’s like this spiritual thing that I need to carry the song somehow."
For his performance, rather than go with one of his cousin’s songs, Bay chose "The Waiting" by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
View this post on Instagram“To me, Tom Petty is the definition of rock ‘n’ roll,” Bay adds. “He’s on my Mount Rushmore of artists, so it’s really cool to be able to sing one of his songs on the show. I don’t have a backup plan, so this is a big moment for me.”

But it was also a nerve-wracking moment. Bay was at the very end of his performance before a single chair turned during the last few notes of the song. And that single-chair turn was Adam Levine.
“That wasn’t a sneaky move or anything like that,” Adam said, after Kelly explained that the two of them had been talking about it. “It seems sneaky as hell.”
“My mom’s a singer, my step-father is a hit songwriter, my dad’s a drummer, so I was always in studios as a kid,” Bay explained when John asked what it was like growing up in Muscle Shoals, which is a famous music hub.

“It’s in your bones,” Adam said. “The tone and the way you delivered the vocals really showed me an understanding of you know rock ‘n’ roll music. Knowing that you know it, is enough for me to be like, ‘This dude is awesome. He’s going to be different than anybody on the show.' I’m super happy that I snuck in and got you at the last minute and didn’t behave like an idiot. I’m pretty sure we’re going to have a lot of taste in common and I’m really excited to find out more.”
The Voice airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
