A Chicago couple says they’re heartbroken after their dream wedding planned for this weekend in Guadalajara, Mexico, was canceled.
Kaity Bucaro and Robbie Morris met 12 years ago in college at Ohio University. They’ve been dating for the past four years and spent the last year planning a cultural experience for their wedding day at a venue near Guadalajara on Friday, Feb. 27.
“It truly was a dream we had been planning, a lot of hours spent on that to make it beautiful,” Bucaro said.
The couple was writing their vows at a River North cafe on Sunday morning when they started getting texts from friends.
“She said, ‘Rob look at this text.’ And immediately I knew something [was wrong]. I’m thinking – what could this be that gave her this reaction?” Morris said.
The region where they were set to say “I do” on Friday was in smoke and flames as Mexican cartel violence encapsulated the area following the killing of drug kingpin Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.”
“Sunday we had to make so many quick decisions while also grieving the fact that the wedding we were trying to put on for a year, and the vision we have in this beautiful location, was no longer available to us,” Bucaro said.
“I think we took turns of one of us being like it’s okay, it’s okay, and the other crying, and then just swapping a little bit back and forth,” Morris added.
The couple made the difficult decision to pivot and leave their Guadalajara dream behind. Instead, they plan to pull off a wedding in the Chicago area in the next four days.
“We’re ready to get married and begin our married life together, so we decided we’re going to press on, and we’re going to find a way,” Morris said.
They are scrambling to find venues and vendors. Bucaro said nearly a dozen family members and friends have jumped in to help.
It’s unclear if they will get any of their money back from the venue in Mexico.
“We’re trying to bring the most of what we had imagined here in Chicago, and we know we wont get that, but if there’s pieces of Mexico we can bring here that would be a dream, starting with a venue,” Bucaro said. “It’s like really trying to find a place to host them and some vendors that can help us out to pull something off.”
At the end of the day, Bucaro and Morris wanted to keep their initial wedding date and begin their lives as husband and wife as planned.
“It just shows that what’s important,” Bucaro said. “And what we’ll be able to pull off in four days is love and being surrounded by people who love us so much and that’s really what matters.”
