ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A scam targeting Spectrum customers has been reported in the community. Scammers are impersonating Spectrum representatives, promising a 50% discount on monthly bills.
The scam often starts with a phone call, email, or text message, officials said. The goal is to separate victims from their money. One News10NBC viewer, Ed Laughlin, received such a call but did not fall for it.
The scammer left a voicemail which said “Hi there. This voicemail is from Spectrum. Without your response, your 50 percent discount on a monthly bill will be removed today.” It directed the recipient to call a number with a Vermont area code, identified as potential spam.
“You represent not just reporting the news, you investigate the news,” Laughlin said.
News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry investigated, suspecting phone spoofing, where the caller ID is falsified. Often these calls actually come from oversees and are made by international crime groups.
“The subscriber that you are trying to reach is not available. Please try your call again later,” said the automated response when calling the number.
While thieves don’t appear to be using this number today, a quick search of scam reporting sites indicates the thieves have used it before. But Laughlin was not fooled.
Laughlin recognized the scam when the number was unrecognizable and confirmed it by calling Spectrum directly.
“That put everything together that it was not a correct number to call,” he said.
Spectrum confirmed the scam in a statement, saying, “This appears to be a scam call impersonating Spectrum. We do not contact customers with threats to remove discounts the same day or ask them to call back to ‘keep’ an offer.”
Spectrum encouraged those who get such calls not to engage and to report them. It is also encouraged to add your number to the Do Not Call Registry. Additionally, report suspicious calls to the FTC and the BBB’s Scam Tracker.
