The scouting and player acquisition never really takes a week off if you’re doing it right.
The latest signing for the Chicago Cubs is lefty Jackson Brockett, who pitched at Nebraska but was not drafted last summer.

— Rich Biesterfeld (@biest22) February 21, 2026The numbers for Brockett in college weren’t necessarily anything to pop your eyes, especially in the Big Ten, but he had his best year as a senior (3.66 ERA over 16 appearances (15 starts), 64.0 IP, 45 K, 23 BB). These kinds of scouting plays are rarely about results in college anyway. There’s something the Cubs like about what Brockett showed in his pitch potential, his physical projectability, and/or whatever he’s been working on over the last few months.
As a prospect signing, rather than a depth or reclamation signing, you can expect Brockett to follow a traditional path for a college drafted starting pitcher. That’ll likely mean extended Spring Training, and then an assignment out to either the Arizona Complex League or Low-A Myrtle Beach, depending on how the Cubs see his development path playing out. Brockett turns 23 next month, and Cubs VP of Pitching Tyler Zombro has indicated that the organization wants to be pretty aggressive in how they promote post-college pitchers. In other words, you’d like to see Brockett reach High-A South Bend by the end of the year.
If he could do that, Brockett would be following the path of one of the most recent undrafted starting pitching prospects to climb the ladder in the Cubs’ organization, Grant Kipp. He’s now a guy getting potential big league attention as a non-roster invitee to camp, and that’s the dream with an undrafted signing.
Back in 2024, by the way, Jackson Brockett threw the Cornhuskers’ first individual no-hitter in 70 years:
Nebraska’s Jackson Brockett tonight vs. Kansas State:• 9.0 IP• 107 pitches• 0 ER• 0 H• 12 KBrockett throws Nebraska’s 1st individual NO-HITTER since 1954 (1954!!!).History for the Huskers. pic.twitter.com/bZNKh4Q3yZ
