On Feb. 23, 1974, rocker Suzi Quatro had a No. 1 hit with the song “Devil Gate Drive.” The song hit No. 1 on the UK singles chart, marking the singer and bass guitarist’s second UK No. 1, per This Day in Music. The song was written by music duo Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, best known for writing hits for Sweet, Toni Basil, and more.
"Devil Gate Drive” also topped the charts in Australia, Ireland, and Norway that year, according to Sound OD.
The hit song came three years before Quatro, now 75, made her debut on the ABCsitcomHappy Days as rocker Leather Tuscadero, the younger sister of Fonzie’s (Henry Winkler) motorcycle riding girlfriend, Pinky (Roz Kelly).
Quatro made her first appearance on Happy Days in 1977, in the Season 5 two-parter titled “Fonzie: Rock Entrepreneur.” In the episode, her character fronted the band Leather and the Suedes. In the ultimate crossover, the band played “Devil Gate Drive” during a gig at Arnold’s Drive-In, the local hangout for the Happy Days gang.
Suzi Quatro revealed why she joined 'Happy Days' but turned down a spinoff
Although she was a real-life rock star, Quatro wanted to branch out in the entertainment industry. She once explained to Classic Rock, "I always had in my gameplan to do everything in the entertainment profession that I felt I could be good at. Rock ‘n roll was my main thing, my security, and I couldn’t do without it. But I also wanted to act, do radio, do much more.”
After appearing in seven episodes of Happy Days, Quatro was given an offer to star in a spinoff about Leather, but she turned down showrunner Garry Marshall.
"I did not want to be stuck into that mold," she told Smashing Interviews magazine in 2021. "People would say, 'Oh, she’s Leather Tuscadero.' It was enough that I was Suzi Quatro, you know. That’s enough. That’s the image I’m going to go to my grave with, which I’m happy to have. But I didn’t want to do Leather Tuscadero the same way. I wanted to do different kinds of roles. I wanted to spread my wings. I didn’t want to be boxed in. If I had done a spinoff, I would’ve been Leather Tuscadero for the rest of my days."
“I am still close with Henry Winkler," the Happy Days alum added. “I remember him talking about that a lot, and that he could never step away from Fonzie. And he’s an actor. That’s his profession. That must be very hard for him."
