Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to the murder of his parents Rob and Michele Reiner.
The plea was entered in a Los Angeles courthouse on Monday, Feb. 23. It remains unclear whether Nick’s defense team plans to pursue an insanity defense amid reports that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and struggling with drug addiction.
Nick is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and could face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted. It could be more than a year before the 32-year-old faces trial, if the case proceeds that far.
The next court date is set for April 29.

The plea comes nearly two months after Nick's former defense attorney Alan Jackson withdrew from the case.
Jackson stepped away from the case during a hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court on Jan. 7. The prolific defense attorney was then replaced with public defender Kimberly Greene.
During a news conference after the hearing, Jackson said he was unable to represent Nick due to circumstances beyond his and Nick’s control, and that he is legally and ethically prohibited from explaining why. However, Jackson made one thing clear: he believes Nick is not guilty of murder under California law.

Rob and Michele Reiner were found murdered in their home on Dec. 14. Later that night, Nick was arrested and charged for the crime.
The Reiner family issued a statement confirming the deaths on the night of Dec. 14.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the statement read, according to Variety.
Reiner first met Singer while filming When Harry Met Sally. The two married in 1989 and later welcomed three children: Jake, 34, Nick, 32, and Romy, 28. Reiner was also the father of daughter Tracy, 61, from a previous marriage.
