Liza Minnelli is letting loose some interesting stories about her mother,Judy Garland, in her new memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! The icon looks back at when she was 18-years-old and her mother furiously telling their producer to get Minnelli off the stage during a 1965 performance.
In 1965, Garland and Minnelli sang together at the London Palladium. Minnelli remembers her other being excited to see her perform and had initially cheered her on from the sidelines during her first song. As Minnelli went into her second, Garland's reaction changed and was noticeably less enthusiastic.
"After my first song [on opening night] I heard her shout, 'Yeah, baby! Go get 'em!'" Minnelli says in an excerpt by PEOPLE. "After the second song, another 'Yeah!' but not quite as strong. By the third song, let's just say she was losing enthusiasm."
The "New York, New York" singer went on to reveal that by the third song and everyone's grand applause, Garland wanted her kicked off the stage. Minnelli says she could hear her mother from the side of the stage while she performed.
"I heard her whispering to our producer, Harold Davison: 'Harold, get her off my f---ing stage!'" she explained. "I just kept singing to wild applause as Mama fumed."
Minnelli soon noticed in a "stunning realization" that her mother's image as a Hollywood icon overtook her role as a mother. The night had started with Minnelli as "Mama's daughter" and quickly turned to become her "onstage with Judy Garland."

It just so happens that a live album titled "Live" at the London Palladium was released in 1965 and comprised those very duet performances. Their performances were a first for the mother-daughter duo and marked the collaboration between two different generations of performers. Minnelli was just starting her career at 18, while Garland was going through the abrupt cancellation of The Judy Garland Show that same year.
Minnelli would reveal in a 2015 interview that she was tricked into performing after having told her mother "no" when initially asked. When Garland had publicly announced the concert, Minnelli had no choice but to join her on stage.
