Sometimes the wrong recipient reveals the right truth.
Saltburn star Richard E. Grant is opening up about how a nearly 30-year friendship turned sour when Grant accidentally learned what this person really thought of him. In a recent interview, Grant revealed he might never have known how this friend truly felt about him if she hadn’t accidentally copied him on an email.
"What I thought was one of the five best friends in my life," Grant, 68, shared on an episode of the Mad, Sad, & Bad With Paloma Faith podcast. "She sent an email from Africa to a mutual friend in Australia who'd asked for my email address, and, because my name was in the body of the email, I got inadvertently sent this email."
The email couldn't have arrived at a worse time because it hit his in-box shortly after Grant learned that a project he had thrown himself into wasn't moving forward due to money issues. He was also shooting the final episode of the hit TV sitcomFrasier, which only added to the sting.

As he was reading the note, he happened across "a paragraph of such toxicity" that inspired him to end the decades-long friendship. "And I thought, 'That's not a real friend anymore.' And I was absolutely devastated," he recalled. "So I copied and pasted that and then sent it back. And I said, '29 years of friendship?'"
Grant offered additional context to the email. "It was of my script that I had written, which was entirely autobiographical," he recounted, reflecting on the 2005 film, Wah-Wah. "And she had read this script. Our daughter was very smart, because she was 16, so exactly 20 years ago. She said to me, 'In your heart of hearts, haven't you always known this about that person?'"
He described the experience as "just brutal," adding, "Because that person knows you in the most formative part of your life, when you're still dreaming of getting regular work out there as an actor. Nevermind the other things that have happened to me since. So when you're betrayed like that, there's no going back for me."
