As a young journalist I was taught that the one question a reporter should never ask is: “How are you feeling?” It was, I was told, just too trite. And yet, in all honesty, it’s generally the one answer we want to hear. And last night William gave it. He is not, he said, “in a calm state”.
I don’t believe it was an off-the-cuff remark. He knows full well that the world’s media are looking for a reaction from him. And the Bafta ceremony is a high profile, global event. Unprompted, William offered the information that he hadn’t joined his wife for a quiet movie night watching Hamnet because he wasn’t feeling calm. It was probably the understatement of the century.
To me it spoke of a man seething with anger.
The Andrew scandal has engulfed the Royal Family and shows no sign of letting up. Even the abdication crisis in 1936 only dominated the headlines for about a fortnight – largely because of what was later called “the great silence” by the media, who hid the true extent of what had been happening. Those days are long gone. Today’s newspapers are uncovering new allegations about Andrew‘s behaviour with almost every passing hour. The Prince of Wales feels helpless to contain the damage being done to the monarchy. And that makes him angry.
We now know that it is affecting not only his work – with questions being shouted at him wherever he goes – but his home life too. On Saturday, Catherine had been at Twickenham watching England play Ireland in the Six Nations. She might have been hoping for something to cheer about at last, but England’s dismal performance put a kibosh on that. So she went home and, it seems, decided to watch Hamnet. She was probably hoping for a cosy film night with her husband. But he wasn’t in the mood. And we know why.
The scale of this scandal is all-consuming. I’m sure the Prince and Princess have tried to shield their children from the worst of the storm assailing the family. But, in the past, William has said that they try to be as honest and open as possible with George, Charlotte and Louis. There’s no doubt that they’ve had to do some skilful parenting in the past few weeks to explain why, wherever they turn, there are headlines or debates about their family and the future of the monarchy.
William has said that change is very much on his agenda. And change there has to be. The demands for more transparency and accountability are now deafening. So let’s have a few answers quickly. For example, why has the Palace apparently got a problem with telling us who paid the reported £12m to the late Virginia Giuffre? It probably was, indeed, largely from Queen Elizabeth’s private wealth – so why not shut down the questions by giving a straightforward answer?

On a human level, I cannot but feel sympathy for Charles, William and their families. None of them asked to be born into this weird world of royalty. It was simply the hand that was dealt them at birth and – privileged as the lifestyle is – – it comes with a huge price. They have to fight or bargain for privacy, and accept scrutiny and criticism of everything they say, do or even wear. I wouldn’t have their job even if you paid me the millions they clearly have.
When I left the BBC many years ago, I drove away from Television Centre with a song blaring out of the loudspeaker in my car. It was by an American country music star called Johnny Paycheck. It was “Take This Job and Shove It (I ain’t working here no more)”.
I wouldn’t blame the Royal Family for doing just that!
